Alone in Berlin (1947) by Hans Fallada is superb. Read it before you see the film.

How? It's based on the book written by a German national after the war.

Hans Fallada was a German who died shortly after this book's publication at the end of the war. The book is a fascinating insight into life under the Nazi regime during WW2, and was written in circumstances that could have lead to the author's execution if the manuscript was discovered.

In what way is this pro-Zionist?

i really love the Quangel's/Trudy story and i forgot her name but the lady who ''adopt'' the child at the end (mrs ennis something like that) story but i was bored with the others...i skip some pages because of that. i'll Watch the movie for sure because of Emma Thompson! i hope they focused on the Quangel.

Couldn't agree more. Fantastic book which I've read several times. Unfortunately I can't see the film doing it justice,even with the impressive cast. But,has there ever been a film that does outshine the book?

Agreed too. A smashing book. The atmosphere created is thick with fear, paranoia and helplessness. It really does bring the period to life as best as possible. The film I'm sure will be good given the quality cast but the atmosphere of fear will be difficult to concoct to the same level. I'm still looking forward to it.

Yes, I too am certainly looking forward to the film. But, I'm afraid I'll be a harsh critic! It's a niche genre that has always interested me and the book catches it magnificently, which will be almost impossible to create on screen. We can only hope......and I'll try not to be to harsh!

Do you feel like it's a prerequisite to have a better grasp of the movie or are you just saying it was an amazing book?

I am asking because I will be watching the movie (despite the rating) so that I can make up my own mind about it.

If the film is well made there will be no need to read the book for "a better grasp of the movie" but it was "an amazing book" and I feel its impact would be diluted by seeing the film first.

I agree valis I've read a few of his books and always felt like I was living his words. Excited to see this picture!
