POSITIVE REVIEWS PROBABLY WILL NOT FIND ON ROTTEN TOMATOES ETC./TWEETS

I can't wait to see this and judge for myself (always best format). Anyway, here are some positive reviews, that will probably never find it's way to rotten tomatoes etc.

1. http://www.voto10.it/cinema/not.php?NewsID=18309 (translated so hopefully the below is correct).

A regular at the Lido, the director and actor James Franco returns, this time out of competition at the Venice Film Festival, offering their own version of the famous novel The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. In itself, the novel deals with themes such as honor, the loss of it, social injustice and love, Franco has dealt with them gently and at the same time strength and courage, remaining faithful to the text. Mississippi, early ' 900. The story recounts the decadence and doom of Compson, an aristocratic family of the South disgrace. Their stories are told from different perspectives. The couple have four children Compson Quentin (Joey King), Candance (Ahna O'Reilly), Jason (Scott Haze) and Benjamin said "Benji" (James Franco). The story of the young Caddy, female only sister, is told by his three brothers. Adaptation, indeed, would be more to say transposition of the screen, as far as possible in line with the novel Faulkner, The Sound and The Fury describes in detail the events and the relationships that exist in the wealthy family of landowners, Compson, the inhabitants of the populous state in the South. Divided into chapters (here three instead of four in the novel), as in the previous films directed by Franco (As I Lying Dying and Child of God ), The Sound and The Fury, despite the lack of the last chapter, that the filmmaker has succeeded equally to insert, the spirit, the setting and the dynamics of family events, present in the work of Faulkner, kept alive. In its narrative form, the script, co-written by Franco with his friend Matt Rager, the two authors have taken some liberties, but finding themes and elements already introduced and explored by the American writer. Love, time and responsibilities, these are the themes, in order of chapter brought out in the film, as if it was the intention of the director, ordered to want to give an interpretation of the complex, but significant novel by Faulkner. During the first chapter, what she sees tell family stories from the point of view of Benji, the 33 year-old mentally challenged son of the patriarch Jason III, the skill has been to speak to the soul of the child inherent in the adult character, telling the sense of protection , and almost obsession, to his sister Caddy. And it is precisely this character, to assume the role of a liaison of the film. Subject to maintain almost inside a bell jar, Caddy is seen as the two brothers, Benji and Quentin, and is despised by the third, Jason Jr. In the film, past and present merge, and chapters are in turn related brilliantly in a succession of powerful rich in suspense. Power that comes sooner or later expressed by all the characters, who are shouting all their fury and frustration. Caddy, Jason and Benji are those who have the most right to be angry more with their lives and with their destiny, unable to change their situation: Quentin is the only one to make a decision, endowed with free will and choosing in fact his tragic fate, probably feeling powerless in the face of the problems of the beloved sister and unhappy in his life. The Sound and The Fury, however, is much more than that, it is also a philosophizing about the existence and feelings, with a background of negativism, but also passion and love, which often result in that cry expression in its highest representation in some certain scenes. Powerful are also the interpretations of the entire cast, especially those of Scott Haze, James Franco and Ahna O'Reilly. The film, like the novel of Faulkner, like or dislike, a priori. To those who have read the work or not, the fact is that the director has succeeded in optimally to deliver frames in the complex original written text, keeping a balance between interpretation and faithfulness. Franco’s most ambitious project, is his best film by far.
Franco has given himself the plum role of the mentally incapacitated Benji. He moans, salivates and moves heavily in what is a largely impressive performance of the type that often wins awards, although the part is not big enough for him to be considered for anything other than supporting actor.

In the second section told from Quentin’s perspective we learn the views of her father, played by Tim Blake Nelson. Nelson is given the job of showcasing Faulkner’s lyrical pose in a brilliant monologue that occasionally doubles as voiceover.

As for The Sound and the Fury, despite some recent negative reviews floating about, I found it to be further evidence (coupled with As I Lay Dying) that Franco is improving as a filmmaker.

“As an actor, I looked to the book,” says Franco. “I have no idea if Faulkner knew someone like this, or had any basis in the way the character is depicted, but I just thought I’d play it like he was written—he’s mute, he bellows, and he’s obsessed with certain things like light and flowers, since they remind him of his beloved sister, Caddy.”

4. http://www.standard.co.uk/goingout/film/venice-film-festival-the-sound -and-the-fury--film-review-9714480.html

Franco, who has filmed Faulkner twice before, plays Benjy, the mentally troubled son who figures in the first section of the book. He speaks no words and grunts and groans, slobbering at the mouth as if determined to bypass his star image. <blockquote>It is a brave performance,
even if slightly like a parody of Brando.
Franco apart, other actors play with skill and power. Jacob Loeb as Benjy’s cynical younger brother, Quentin, and Loretta Divine, in the important role of the family’s black maid, Dilsey, are outstanding.

5. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/1morefilmblog/tiff-2014-the-sound-and-the -fury/

If I was not as enthusiastic about the film as Venice audiences apparently were, that’s as much an admission about my own tastes (both cinematic and literary) as it is a judgment of its quality.

Sound is important in the film, as the title would suggest, and it is used expertly to create an oppressive environment that allows you to feel rather than merely witness the Compsons’s desperation.

Take you pick, Meryl Streep doing another accent or James Franco drooling and biting someone on the buttocks. Both are tales told by master actors, full of spit and venom, signifying that there will be one less nomination spot available next award season.

6. http://www.elantepenultimomohicano.com/2014/09/toronto-2014-criticas-e den-la-entrega-the-drop-el-ruido-y-la-furia-madame-bovary.html?utm_sou rce=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ElAnte penultimoMohicano+%28EL+ANTEPEN%C3%9ALTIMO+MOHICANO%29 (translation needed for full).

The result is something genuine, very personal, powerful and great poetic, which betrays the brutality that conveys the novel, offering instead a piece destined not to make friends. At least not between certain audience.

Although the whole set works, Benji's who catches our attention. The narrative of his thought is impregnated with a subjective look at feelings and images, where the happiest memories are usually the most frequent, with an edition that recalls Tom Tywker which conducted to the sensory moments of perfume . Brief and evocative images like a flower in his hand, which for Benji are moving to a childhood memory.

Overall, the whole work works, moves and maintains consistency in tone, but certainly more where passion has turned James Franco has been in its own segment. It is showing that the actor directs, not because you feel like a change of scenery, but because I really feel he wants to tell. 75 | 100. | ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ |

7. http://theeyeopener.com/2014/09/the-eye-reviews-tiff/ - Verdict: 4/5

For fans of the novel, this is a must-see for those who have not read Faulkner’s period piece of the Compson family, this is a film to see for the performances alone.

Franco playing the mentally challenged Benjy is captivatingly believable, Jacob Loeb’s take as the suicidal Quentin makes the audience relate to them in every way and Scott Haze as the eldest and angriest brother, Jason, is so terrifying you will shake.

8. http://www.electricsheepmagazine.co.uk/reviews/2014/09/27/the-sound-an d-the-fury/

This is pure, delicious Southern Gothic at its most insane. It even indulges in some delightful Terence Malick Tree of Life shenanigans, which play like parody of the highest order. Some might believe Faulkner would be spinning in his grave over this one, but I doubt it. I think even he might have himself as rip-roaring a good time as I did.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to gather these positive responses to the movie. It's very frustrating that people keep focusing on wanting an adaptation to live up to their own acknowledging of a book -- that's just stupid: of course a book it's better at being itself! A movie is its own thing. I'm glad that Franco is spreading Faulkner oeuvre, and I'm really looking forward to see this one.

reply

Thanks! I was happy to gather these positive responses as certain critics only like to report the negatives only (most of the time the negative showcases that the critics haven't even read the novels before they hate on Franco). Any positivity in terms of Franco as a Director generally tends not to be updated on Rotten Tomatoes or other sites.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. What I find shocking is that any fan of William Faulkner should be sincerely happy that someone at least tried to bring his novels to life via cinema (Faulkner's solid legacy further introduced to a new generation that might not be aware of it, thanks in part to Franco).

What's more I don't even understand the problem with Franco in undertaking this task (his hardest critics regarding some fans, want a particular director to do so, but if they're not interested, after all As I Lay Dying came to screen after 80 years and The Sound and the Fury since 1959, then why not Franco). The guy has stayed extremely faithful to As I Lay Dying and apparently this new movie The Sound and the Fury (with award worthy performances and picture by the looks of it).

How can people in certain corners still complain? Apparently, Faulkner's Estate has been involved in both cases of Franco's adaptations but you wouldn't think it looking at Faulkner's own facebook pages (they never report it, so fans are NOT aware). Of course, in some rare instances the book has not been better than the movies but again, so very rare.

A movie is its own thing
This statement seems lost on some audiences (talk about closed minds). Why can't you truly enjoy the novels of Faulkner and others, which will never disappear and enjoy the unique experiences of movie adaptations also? Again, the main problem seems to stem from jealousy that Franco achieved it and not some other director they deemed more qualified than Franco but they were afraid to try.

Like you, I'm grateful that Franco and his team have been extremely faithful to the source materials when adapting these novels (he was also faithful to Child of God novel by Cormac McCarthy) and I'm also looking forward to this movie.

Franco might end up as one of those directors that his work is not appreciated in that particular year that the movie comes out but with certain amount of time - it will be loved/respected (I believe he has made quite a few classics). I always look forward to seeing him grow in relation to his directing/acting.

As a big fan of Faulkner--this novel in particular--and as a skeptic of Franco, I'm going to give this movie a chance. I think Franco can be an incredible actor, but I have yet to find any of the films he's directed as anything more than unwatchable. Franco's adaptations of As I Lay Dying and Child of God don't give me too much hope though...

reply

Thanks for the reply. Nice, giving this movie a chance and I hope you enjoy the experience.

Shame you didn't enjoy them but to me classics.

Note: It seems his directing of Saturday Night (2014) documentary on Hulu Plus (US showing only at the moment), is gaining positive feedbacks, so you might want to check that out too, if you enjoy SNL. Again, I can't wait to watch this also.
