I'm assuming you're talking about Eve Best's character, and that was done to make it look like a suicide. If a rope is simply used to strangle a person it doesn't leave a pattern in the correct shape and the coroner is able to tell that another person did it.
shareThis method bothered me in the sense that it seemed extremely elaborate and highly unlikely to fool anyone into thinking the person hung themselves. Any forensic investigator would find marks from the board on the victims skin as well as residue and splinters from the board. On top of that, I think they left the board behind. Never mind the fact that they would need to drag around a board that is longer than the victim in order to make it work. Hardly discreet.
I would say it was added just for dramatic effect but I'm sure the writers got the idea from somewhere. I couldn't find anything in Google.
You can clearly see that in the end they hung her from the hotelroom door.
