The Ending. What was all that about? [Spoilers]

Can somebody please explain what happened there in the last 20 minutes of the film? O_O Everything post the making out scene between Ansel and Claire. Was Ansel drugged? Claire and fake Dad having sex? What was all that about?

reply

I'll throw my 2 cents in but I'll admit I don't feel 100 percent confident on this explanation.

So Ansel is some famous/infamous deprogrammer who rescues people from cults. Claire is the cult leader for Faults. For whatever reason Faults has decided to target Ansel. This might be because he is a famous deprogrammer or a symbol of non-believers, people who undermine what Faults is about. They scam him into joining them.

I don't think he was drugged but he was sleep deprived and sick (bloody noses). With the help of the fake parents, I think they did something to the door to make it unlock. The parents were totally in the cult and there was some mention about sex earlier in the film while other watched. I think that was just part of the cult's ritual.

Well, yes and no. Her "mother" says at the end that his knowledge is going to help "Ira" spread her teachings. They want to use what he knows about mind control to expand.

My take is that Claire is actually Ira and she is Faults God/leader. But there's nothing supernatural though, she used drugs and sex to control and influence their members (like most cults seen in real life). As seen with "Mom" and "Dad" of course. I don't know exactly cults use sex the way they do though (ask a Davidian or a Manson family member)! I don't know if it's a reward, to invoke fear, etc but I think the gist of it is control. She literally says I'm in control now when she tells him to lick her face.

The drugs probably caused Ansel to smell something floral and have repeated nosebleeds. So she drugged him to move him around and disorientate him further (making him think he lost his free will to a higher power/God). She locked the door to make him think he could open it if he was able to phase through walls when probably she was probably just working in tandem with the fake parents/her followers.

And she snags him into her cult in the end with all of those techniques plus making him feel like he's made a breakthrough in his life. Pretty the last 20 minutes of the movie summed up for ya.

Pretty smart movie IMO, its like an inside look into a person being assimilated into a cult. We see why they truly think they saw "God".

The fake parents called her Ira at the end, so she was.

Those are exactly my thoughts.

Y'all summed it up to exactly what l was thinking.

He could actually write another book now and spread the cult- Faults. Ira was, in my opinion, revenging the girl he tried to "deprogram," and then the girl ended up killing herself.
