Great little movie, but had some questions -spoilers

Considering the scope and scale I thought this was an excellent movie. Winstead was perfect in the role of a victim of a cult and Orser is perfect as the ineffectual male who only seemed comfortable when talking about his area of expertise. Parents were great and just off enough to make you wonder what was going on. Clearly the Dad was domineering (played that way for a purpose obviously) to get Ansel wondering if there was child abuse going on or if the Dad's personality was so controlling his daughter was right to escape it, but also ripe for a cult. The move really illustrates with great acting and a clever script you can make a terrific movie without much of a budget.

Couple of things I didnt get:

I didnt understand the nose bleeds. If they served a purpose I have no idea what it was since a nose bleed by itself can mean any number of things. If they wanted to make it seem like he wasnt feeling well I think a fever or something like that would have done the job better.

Did the parents let them out of the bathroom? Obviously no one can travel through objects so I assume they set that up to make him more susceptible to suggestion.

The make out scene with him then waking up in his car.

And the only thing I didnt like was how wild Ansel started getting and the speed at which he was converted. I guess it was keeping in line with his character coming unravelled along with the pressure of owing money, but the both seemed a little excessive.

Pretty much agree with everything you said.. But I actually thought the walking through doors stuff was real. But maybe you're right, that makes sense. I'd like to believe that this one cult was legit though.

Didn't understand the nosebleeds either, but they did seem to be a physical manifestation of something actually going on.

And did he actually lick her, kiss her, etc, or was that just a dream?

Yes, that was the only thing I would have liked to see handled differently. It was a lightning conversion, like Paul on the road to Damascus, except with less reason. He gets into a fight with "Daddy", has some odd experiences, and suddenly he's a total convert. I guess, given time limitations, they couldn't do much else, but it would have been nice to see Ansel have some doubt and a gradually dawning change of heart. Still, it's a minor complaint in an otherwise riveting film that I enjoyed even more on 2nd viewing than 1st.

The door was never locked. He was pushing against it in his panic and once calmed easily pulled it open
