I don't quite understand the ending

I know Claire took Ansel back to the cult, but why did she ask her 'parents' to lie to trap Ansel?

Was it to do with the other girl who'd died??

reply

We don't know why Ansel was targeted by the cult. It's never explained. It could have been because of his prominence as a deprogrammer, and perhaps because he was so lost as well. That seems most logical, but it could have been for other reasons never explained.

In the same way, we don't know what fate they had planned for Ansel. Perhaps he's meant to be just another member, or perhaps they're going to exact revenge for his previous activities, or perhaps he has some special talent they need or a purpose in "Ira's/God's" plan.

reply

At the end her "mother" mentioned that Ansel's know how about how effective cults operate will allow Ira to fine tune her cultivation and recruit even more numbskulls.

reply

What about sending her parents off to the "next level"? What she scamming them too?

reply

Not her parents, just cultists, they never explain her motivation for the cult, she just gets off getting people to kill themselves

reply

Well, they took really pills and died and believed they were going to the next level. Whether or not that is a "scam" is up to interpretation- do cult leaders know that they are crazy? that there is no next level just suicide?

They aren't really her parents-- they are cult members who under her guidance pretended to be her parents so she could brainwash Ansel.

At the end the "mom" says "With his knowledge your teachings
will grow beyond anything we ever could have imagined." So they think that having the expert on their side will give them more power, legitimacy, outreach.

It's winning over an enemy to your side. One less foe against you and then you learn their tricks/secrets. Not to mention a sense of accomplishment-- if you can win over the cult deprogrammer, you can win over anyone, no?

reply

Yeah I thought they might not be her real parents (shame we never found out who the real parents were).

It would seem that Claire / Ira is the cult leader. But since everything she said was lies, is there really a cult, or is Claire / Ira a one woman operation???

reply

I think there is a cult. The parents are evidence she has followers. She says "Out of everyone I picked you" [spoiler][spoiler]

reply

I also thought there is no cult.
And there is a way to explain "Out of everyone I picked you". There is a quite common belief in some circles that the soul of a child can choose its parents before being born. So maybe Claire manipulated her parents into believeing that, among other things.
Anyway, both interpretations are possible. Very, very clever writing.

reply

Wouldn't it be especially sick if they actually were her parents? Like, she was able to brainwash and recruit her own parents into this cult.

reply

I thought they were actually her parents.I took it that she killed them in order to finally escape their worrying. During the night scene, where there's silhouettes of them doing some fishy stuff in the background, I though that was Claire/Ira brainwashing them, something out of The Shining.

2015: Slow West, Lost River, Faults

reply

Or there is no cult, and she simply manipulated her parents into believing she's a god. And maybe the cult begins with her recruiting Ansel.

reply

With the way the ending played out, I really began to believe those weren't her parents. Just cult followers.

reply

Who gives af..k who her real parents are lol. They had nothing to do with the movie at all!

reply

Yes, they recruited Ansel for his expertise. I didn't get this until second viewing because I missed the "mother's" line the first time around.

FWIW, I think there is indeed a real cult with other members. Otherwise, why would Ansel be of any use to "Ira"? What could he do for a one-woman operation - basically just a serial killer? And I don't think those were her real parents. Maybe I just don't want to think that - it's really just too creepy and dark, even for this very creepy, dark (and very good) film.

reply

Its not about legitimacy or outreach....ffs...

Or winning an enemy...or one less foe (seriously our governments have millions of followers), its not about a sense of accomplishment either.

Its about knowledge and teachings. She legitimately had knowledge and powers.

Oh what a day. What a lovely day!

reply

I too am of the mind that there is no actual cult beyond whomever is immediately serving Claire/Ira; consider that she disposes her "parents" not long after inducting Ansel, which suggests a system where her followers are limited to but one or two, and constantly being replaced; where only the illusion of some larger group or following is necessary in wielding her influence.

To me, such is a far more interesting and frightening concept, that Claire/Ira is this wandering singularity who's able to maintain a degree of anonymity.

Maybe you need glasses because I watched it on Netflix and it was very clear that the "dad" was on top of claire moving his body up and down with the "mom" watching.

reply

Egad ... I somehow missed that too. I'm glad the movie has gotten so much positive acclaim here but I didn't really like it, and that would help explain why. I think the explanation I would have liked is that Ira targeted Anselm to punish him for the girl who died. But then she wouldn't have had to off the 'parents, unless to somehow set them up for the murderer of Terry and his actor friend/tough guy.

[deleted]

Maybe you need to just stay in the kitchen and cook and not worry bout watching stuff

reply

no need to be so rude.

They were cult members, and it might be their cult ritual and stuff(hooking up behind tv). She lip kisses both of them before they take the pills too. They were trying to con Roth and recruit him.

I just watched this on Netflix myself and I had no doubt while he was watching his show that "dad" was having sex with "Claire" while "mom" watched. 1:09:05 to 1:09:24. It's blurry but unmistakeable.

reply

[deleted]

you probably just missed it the first time and you're making excuses for having argued about it.

No sympathy from that quarter, I'm afraid. I, too, am constantly doing other when watching. Plus, my kindle keeps stopping and I have to back up, then jump ahead and usually miss even a few scenes! So don't feel badly, I didn't see that either.

reply

Why the hell would someone watch a movie that's a thriller and not actually pay attention to it.... if you need something on for distraction watch some sitcom with no plot

We shant be telling mother about this shant we?

reply

It's at around the 1:09 mark depending on your version where he's watching himself on his TV show with Jennifer

so it doesn't generate a lot of smoke from the olive oil.

please help me. please. thanks you sir.

Switch to peanut oil, grapeseed oil or corn oil. Don't fry in olive oil. It has a low smoke point, as you have discovered.

There ... was that helpful?

[deleted]

Sorry. No help to offer. Perhaps you should just watch Netflix and cook at the same time, ignoring yoonc's advice, which I'm sure was meant to be kind and helpful, as all such comments on imdb invariably are.

OTOH, I now realize that you must not live in North America, where the cheapest cooking oil per gallon - that's a lot of oil, by the way - is definitely not olive oil. Who knows what strange conditions exist in foreign lands? I'm afraid I can't help you at all. Best of luck to you, though, in your quest.

reply

[deleted]

Yeah, peanut oil is expensive.

You could try canola oil. It's pretty cheap. Tastes nasty when allowed to overheat, though, which sort of gets back to the original problem. Personally, I fry with corn oil, but I have no idea how that stands in price compared to bulk olive oil.

Well, good luck with the cooking-while-Netflixing. Remember to clean the oil haze off the screen from time to time.
