why are they going to italy at the end?

In the opening scene, the little boy is practicing Italian. Mom asks why. The kid says because dad promised to take him for summer vacation. After Dad is killed, mom finds the book he had been using in the garbage can.

I guess she decided to take him on the promised trip.
