So much bloody British b*llocks.

The overuse of "British slang" and references got really annoying. I'm British and it's both jarring and insulting for a movie to keep dropping in "local colour" the way they did.

Beyond the use of British terms like "mobile" and "quid" by American characters and the Mary Poppins way some of the "londoners" talked are the blatant "insert British thing here" parts of the script

For example "our first car was a rover that smelled like fish n chips"

Lol yeh I couldn't agree more

It sounded so wrong, I live in England myself. Spoit the film for me but still had fun watching Costner.

The most laughable was when he stole that van from those guys outside the take away...

'He's taking our van!'
'What? That's bang out of order.'
'That's bang out of order, mate.'

I lolled so hard. As if that's what you'd say if someone was going to steal your car.

It was only after the guy got smacked in the face, the real dialogue came out, i think there was a c-bomb in there...

Must admit... i laughed out loud when that scene flopped up :D
You Tube Friends episodes, were they take the piss out of english accents.
The director of this movie should've took heed from them episodes.

It depends where you come from though, doesn't it? Just because YOU don't say it doesn't mean others don't.

reply

And here I think what's actually the most laughable is someone, who is supposed to be speaking English, typing "I lolled so hard."

reply

Have to agree. It was quite over the top.

reply

Doesn't help that the film was utter *beep* too. So ridiculous.

you think you have it bad...we in Hong Kong are always portrayed as...Lambo Driving...Money Grubbing...Money Laundering...unscrupulous...unethical...Fund Managers...who would sell their Grandmothers to Science Labs for "experiments." ...ok it's actually true...but

what's a little Mary Poppins man 😐

...bar is closed people stagger out
the pretty, the crippled, and the proud.

Probably a reference to Dick Van Dyke's excruciating cockney accent in that film.

reply

5 year olds don't mind exotic accents...well Jewish children have built-in aversion to German accents...but you can't blame them.

Yeah but I found it more amusing than annoying. Another thing, although not slang, was when the chippie owner said something like "not worth the kerfuffle"!

I agree - the van scene was particularly ludicrous Costner: 'I'm taking your van' 1st man
'What did he say?' 2nd man 'he said he's taking our van' 1st man 'that's out of order' 2nd man 'yeah mate that's out of order'. Ha ha yeah like that's how it would go down. I think was just the Americans making another nation's people look soft. The film was absolutely toss.

'Well I've got two words for you - STFU'
