Disbelief

Why can people suspend disbelief and just enjoy movies like Godzilla or Bad Teacher or Vince Vaughn movie as just plain fun... But the minute a movie is billed as Christian, people jump to dismiss. This is barely Christian. It's meant to be a light-hearted clean cut family comedy. Just go and watch it, instead of complaining they talked about Jesus, barely.

Good point!

So why is it billed as a Christian movie if it's barely Christian?

It's billed as Christian because there are some Bible verses, the central characters are Christian (including a Pastor's wife) and it is clean-cut. But that doesn't mean the whole film is based around the Bible and Christianity. In many ways, it's actually an escape from the Biblical lives they lead.

Also, think about it like the Emmy's or the Academy Awards. Often times they don't know how to classify a movie, so they take one element and call it that. Take a movie like Zero Dark Thirty for instance. That was billed as a Drama. Yes, there is drama in it, but it also features war, strategy, comedy, propaganda, documentary.

Moms' Night Out is a comedy, but since there are very few movies that are appropriate for adults and kids, they label it with the Christian label, to let you know, it's clean.

Where does it label it as Christian? I would like to know so I can watch for this label and save some time for myself by avoiding them. I think it's great they exist for those who like this kind of movie, but I don't prefer them.

I would hope you wouldn't just dismiss it because it is Christian. As far as where it is labeled that, the production company is known for making Christian films and it was advertise on Christian media such as K-Love, Air 1 and UPtv. However, this movie is not "Christian." Yes, it has a pastor's wife, the Characters are Christians and they make some Biblical references, but they are very few and far between. There's no "Christian Message." The message is moms need breaks, and this was the moms having their one night of fun that got out of hand.

reply

It may be "barely Christian", but it was even more barely comedy. It was just too boring to continue to watch.

reply

I respect your opinion. It's good that you gave it a chance before ruling it out. I find a lot of "comedies" are not funny and quite dull these days. When people just say it's bad because it's Christian without giving it a shot and understanding it's small budget, that is not right. Give a film a shot before you rate it. You did that. I respect that.

reply

I watched the whole thing. I think many people say it's good just because it's Christian.

reply

It's because it's lame. We all have different genres of films we like, but watching Christian (or any religion oriented films) is extremely dorky. I mean, is life such a struggle that you need a "good moral film with Christian values" to satisfy you? To remind you to keep the faith? It's cheesy. I watched the film. Was it a good movie? Not really. But it wasn't bad either. What did stick out like a sore thumb however was those random, sporadic sprinklings of religion that seemed really out of place in the film. But the point is, this movie genre is like Christian Rock music. I'm sorry, it's just lame. While I'm not a religious person, I don't listen to rock bands singing lyrics like "DARWIN IS THE BEST! HE SURE DID DISCOVER THOSE CHANGES!" It's like...no. I can tone it down and enjoy things for what they are, as they are, rather than forcing myself to only want to watch or listen to things that reaffirm my own views.

Unlike you know superhero movies that have the good guy beating the bad guy to make you feel better. Or a movie where the guy and girl end up together makes you feel better about your own relationship or people get ideas from romantic movies. Most of the scripts of these movies are lame, yet people go and watch and enjoy. Movies are made for different people. Maybe a romance, comedy or superhero movies excite, motivate or make you feel good, just as this movie does for some Christians

reply

First, these things are fiction. I don't watch superhero movies to reaffirm my beliefs that superheroes are real, or as a moral support. I simply watch it because it's entertaining, and I don't expect to derive anything more than that. Here's a litmus test; if you take a superhero out of a superhero movie, it's no longer a superhero movie. But you could remove every element of religion out of this film Mom's Night Out and it would be a fully functioning standalone film. A film doesn't have to be religion oriented to have family values, as well as abstain from sexual or profane references. Which stands to reason then that this film has superficially injected religious principles into a plot where it doesn't need to be. This only serves to allow people to say "It's a good Christian film!" and feel the need to reaffirm their own beliefs rather than simply watching a wholesome family comedy. And that's lame.

Non-religion and/or other religions entering the US are at an all time high. I'm not interested in the politics of this, but the point of the matter is that Christianity is now having to take a firmer stance more than ever on reaffirming their beliefs. I mean, to be frank, I know plenty of people who would self identify as being Christian. But their idea of begin Christian is "Well...I believe in God." And that's about it. No talk of religion, no going to church regularly, no living a pious life. And I would wager that that sort of Christian heavily outweighs those who do follow the faith more rigorously in today's climate.

reply

This is not a fully functioning standalone film, with or without the religion. If you could remove every element of religion out of this film then there would be much less support of it. It is a stupid movie, regardless of the religion and would get much less support if it did not have the religion aspect. I was misled into recording it and advising it to my mother because so many people said it is very good. It is not good.

reply

What I meant was that you could tell the exact same story without the religious element. All the mishaps in the film could be told without a religious angle. You can't do that with a superhero film minus the superhero. I agree this film is not good, but the story can at least be told without a religious piece.

reply

Nothing I said conflicts with what you say here. I am saying that the story would not be good whether the religion is part of it or not.

Godzilla or Bad Teacher (Vince Vaughn movie?) are movies that you know what you are getting into. The trailer may try to make it look better then what it is but don't lie that it's that type of movie. With Moms's Night Out (which I rented at RedBox), hide the fact that it's not a Date Night comedy movie. It try to hide the Christian movie and try to be a comedy movie, knowing that people will only see the trailer or the poster (Date Night rip off) or the short description of the movie which has nothing in it about a Christian movie. Look up on Redbox.

I have seen many movies that talk about the Bible and use verses that is not a Christian movie. It's a bait and switch to get people to rent it. The movie was not good with the lame plot with lack of funny senses.
