Frances McDormand

Is and has been one of the greatest actors around. Period. The male actor always getting ignored too is Gary Oldman. Enough said.

There are just no words to describe her acting. You don't even see the "acting." Even when some other great actors are giving fantastic performances, you can still sometimes see the effort being made. It's hard to explain, but....

With Frances, she is just so natural. Her acting just astounds me.

Same with Bill Murray.

I think they are both very highly regarded. Neither are even close to being ignored, are they?

Frances McDormand is THE greatest character actor working today. All the cast is astonishing especially Richard Jenkins and Peter Mullan but this is a series to watch and rewatch.

Frances McDormand vs. Meryll Streep

She is simply wonderful in this role and a wonder in general. I believe she and Meryl Streep are the best actresses of our generation. Both can disappear into a role like no others. Loved this adaption of a very good book... hope there is more to come.

I find that Streep hasn't challenged herself like McDormand. The roles aren't as complex.

reply

I don't know about that! Streep has taken on some really varied roles, accents, musicals, genres etc..

Yeah, she is always happy to tackle and master a new superficial aspect. She can put on an aspect. Do a "here's Meryl Streep as your worst nightmare boss!". "Look it's Meryl Streep singing!".

But she never plunges the emotional depths Frances McDormand does.

Of course, Streep is incredible compared to most. But I vastly prefer McDormand's approach.

I would think it was obvious that Streep does the emotional stuff on top of the rest of it. Out Of Africa, Sophie's Choice, etc... hence all the Oscars.

Not as well as McDormand.

Oscars mean nothing.

Darnedest thing I have read all week.

Incredible performance in a complex role. I have always liked her but always considered Streep the amazing actor. However with this drama she has just vaulted up a level. Jenkins is amazing as well.

Just when I think the was incapable of bettering herself, she does this. What a truly astounding performance. She is not ignored, but doesn't get the plaudits she should. The finest actress of my lifetime no doubt.

I was just mesmerized by her performance in this.

Agree that McDormand is a magnificent performer who never fails to astound me.

Relative to Streep, McDormand gets many nominations but far fewer wins. (Not that I consider a tally of hardware a vindication of her abilities.)

She's somewhere in the middle of being ignored and being acknowledged. I think she's one of those actors that is so good and so convincing every time that it's almost easy to overlook her because you never see her "working." She's been a favorite of mine since the beginning with "Blood Simple" and honestly, despite her more recognized success in "Fargo," sometimes I love her best when she pops up in the really small supporting roles and owns every scene she's in such as Dot in "Raising Arizona" -- ("Rollie! You take that diaper off your head and you put it back on your sister!") or Bunny in "Lone Star."

I was glued to her performance throughout "Olive Kitteridge." The fact that she and the rest of that amazing cast were able to transcend such a simple story into a sweeping, riveting narrative was nothing short of extraordinary.

She's a rare talent and a real gem.

What I love about her is that perhaps she gets ignored because she's not interested in gaining popularity like actresses such as Meryl Streep. She's against a lot of Hollywood stereotypes and doesn't need to have a constant inflated ego. She's not interested in keeping a good relationship with the press as I heard her saying in many interviews. That's why all the ignoring.

And I agree, she's unique; I am completely in love with her; it's not a physical thing; I just can't explain it. I loved her in Fargo and North Country and she completely blew me away as Olive Kitteridge.

At least she got her more than well deserved Oscar for Fargo.
