More relatable characters than BBT
I've read people compare Betas to BBT, after begrudgingly watching the show and liking it more with each new episode, I find this group to be more relatable and realistic of how "beta" guys really are versus BBT.
If you're a geek or a nerd, then you or someone you know have probably had an instance similar to Mitch and Mikki, especially the part where she stood him up with no reason. Aside from that, he is the passionate, lovable nerd we all have in our lives.
Everyone knows a Hobbes type: burnt out, a little skeevy, pretty much a loser but has a worldly wisdom that makes them cool as hell. Folks like that were born about 20 years too late to be a hippie. Same with Dane being a pretentious, superficial, artsy douche that actually has a good side to him that makes him likable. The beta factor with those two is up in the air, as they seem to find luck with the ladies easily.
Nash is the insecure, introverted (and closeted) nerd that, if not for his friends pulling him out into the world, would be perfectly fine with pounding out lines of code on his PC.
Trey, he's the "alpha beta", meaning he was probably nerdy growing up, but now that he's found his passion, his determination to see it through now gives him a new-found confidence that boosts his social and romantic luck.
Throw a room full of beta guys into a room, and you'll see some variation of these personalities collide and come together.
