Can anyone compare this to Gallipoli

Has anyone seen both "The Water Diviner" and "Gallipoli" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082432/ . Are they similar ? I loved "Gallipoli", will I like this ?

reply

No, they aren't really similar at all. This movie is about a man going to Gallipoli after his wife dies to bring the bodies of his sons who dies there back to be buried next to her. There isn't that much shown of the battle but this movie does touch on the importance of the battle to the people of Australia. It's a pretty good movie overall I think.

"Gallipoli" underscored the atrocious British military's decisions that treated ANZAC soldiers as cannon fodder. They were improperly supported as a military campaign. The Turks are seen only as Other.
Here the British soldiers and diplomatic corps are all solid with all the citizens of the British Empire - no trace of second-class citizenship for their veterans.

They are very different films. The water diviner is set after the war. It is about a father who lost three sons in gallipoli and wants to bury them at home. Gallipoli is about two young men training for war and ultimately finishes with them in battle. Both are interesting films that condemn war as a waste of human life. But for me, Gallipoli is the superior film. The ending still chills me and it has one of the most incredible soundtracks.

They are very different, but in some ways "The Water Diviner" is a sequel.

reply

No, "Gallipoli" is based on fact and "The Water Diviner" is nothing but pure fiction.
