Suspiciously high score

Where did the nearly 2000 (46%) 10/10s for this movie come from? It really is a very messy, flawed film combining a serious drama with Indiana Jones ridiculousness, and I would be unsurprised if the score has been flooded in some way.

reply

maybe you're just alone in your opinion and that a lot of people really like it? The response from Turkey in particular has been very positive. Just check Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

reply

You might be right - but it just seems like too many '10s'; there are almost no reviewers saying it's a masterpiece. But two of the people I went with loved it.

Have you ever checked out ratings for Turkish films? they give everything 10/10, just have a look at their silly comedies.

1100 films rated and climbing :D

You mean like this? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1831164/ratings?ref_=tt_ov_rt

reply

Actually Leyla ile Mecnun was the most original TV Series. I never came across any show like this. It was canceled because of political reasons which shows how effective it was.

reply

You can't call Leyla ve Mecnun a silly drama. Please don't talk about the things you don't know. Leyla ve Mecnun deserves his score.

Also check the bottom 100 movies. See how many turkih films there are.

reply

Yeah, it sucks that nationalistic pride ruins the ratings system. I like to watch foreign films, but without a doubt the top 500 films are clogged with hard to find Turkish films with 9+ averages and almost no US votes. How can I tell which foreign films are actually worth watching when they do crap like this.

reply

I loved The Water Diviner and gave it 9/10.

reply

I gave The Water Diviner 10/10 & am neither Turkish or Australian; it simply entertained me thoroughly throughout. At no point did I think to myself 'this could be better' - even the far-fetched 'divining' parts.

when you were cheking the ratings, did you bother to watch any of the movies before you called them silly? Because just because you don't like them (in this case you don't understand them) it doesn't make them silly, well at least not all of them, right? Why generalization? And you are free to watch any film you like then vote them so give them 0 or 1 but do not insult them if you are a real film enthusiast or a movie buff.
And some movies because of the history and the emotions they carry, may get more points so what is the big deal? Gravity gets 7,9 for Gods sake :)

I watched one, was terrible. And are you aware you can't score a film a 0? Have you ever rated?

1100 films rated and climbing :D

reply

If you only watched one so do not use plural, and if you want to watch a good one ask to someone who knows before whinning about them and no I didn't know that we can give 0 to a movie because I have never felt the need of it since I think no movie deserves 0. And since I have been a member here for 7 years and you just 2 :) your question 'have you ever rated' seems a little bit funny, don't you think? But contrary to you obviously, I use 'rating button' with a purpose not just for 'climbing'

BTW,I do not always write replies but when I do, I do my researc :) so your ratings compared to mine;

Rated 109 of the same titles.

Similar ratings for 70 of them.

Thinks another 12 are better.

Thinks 20 are worse. (we have just made it 21 then :)

I think you give ratings to films and TV series too easily. 10/10 should be saved for the most touching and incredibly moving films of all time. 9/10 also close to most incredible films. You gave pink panther 10/10, hence one of the best movies of all time. Your taste is simply quite different from mine,

1100 films rated and climbing :D

reply

First of all I did not give 10 to this movie, I gave 9 because as a Turkish girl who was raised with the stories of Çanakkale (Gallipoli) this movie is ' touching and incredibly moving' for ME. Should we think globally before we rate a movie?? you even not consider watching the movies bofore you call them silly !!

Of course we have different tastes, but the point I was trying to make, only because you don't like the movie it doesn't mean it is bad. I gave Pink Panther Strikes Again' a 10 and yes ıt was a perfect example of Peter Seller's movies and the best one for ME.Me is the key Word here.

Judging by the number of (negative) posts you have made about this movie, you have a really bad attitude to it (the movie). We get it, you don't like it! Now shut up and do something more constructive with your time.

reply

I think you give ratings to films and TV series too easily. 1/10 should be saved for the most disturbing and incredibly boring films. 2/10 is also close to the most boring films. You gave Frozen, Lego Movie, Hobbit series 1/10. Your taste is simply quite different from mine.

reply

With all due respect;
Romantik komedi 8
Hangover series 7-8-9 (respectively)
Twilight series 7-8
and
Gravity 4
Seriously? 😅

No just to make you smile :) with all due respect...

You are the silly comedy, you cant judge a nation's comedy because humor changes from culture to culture. To us, many American romantic "comedies" are way too cheesy and their jokes are too silly. So shut up and don't make jealousy obvious.

reply

Lol you better recheck the meaning of jealousy as you have no idea what it means

reply

So Sponge you saying is propaganda from Turkey all this 10(!) ratings?
You seem to be right, its not movie rating its nationalist propaganda rating.

reply

No I think they're just saying that Turkish people are extremely enthusiastic about movies depicting their homeland. Turkish people seem to be very nationalistic culturally in general, which is fine especially since they probably rival Italy for best food on Earth and Istanbul is beautiful, but that's irrelevant since we;re talking about how it kind of ruins ratings on IMDB.

reply

As a Turk I concur with that opinion. Turks are too concerned with their global image (be it Turkey, or the Turkish people). It seems as a result of excessive nationalism but the underlying cause is the inferiority complex with regards to the western world (which they idolize and hate at the same time). But dont let this deter you from the rest of Turkish cinema. There are many fine original films such as:

- EÅŸkiya
- Ahh Belinda
- Uzak
- Bir Zamanlar Anadolu'da
- Vesikalı Yarim
- Anayurt Oteli
- Otobüs

reply

i second this from spongebob, is it weird when i read your comment i did in spongebobs voice lol

reply

Well, he is not alone! It was pure *beep* turkish propaganda! No wonder all Turks honoured it with 10s!

reply

Hey I agree but I'm getting grilled over at my post!

reply

Sir i have to agree this film doesn't look enticing enough to get a high review.
American sniper was pretty sweet and it stands at 7.5. I have to admit though,
I rarely leave films even if I'm bored for the 1st hour. If I do I cannot fairly
give a rating on the film, if I want to be honest with myself. You and everyone else
has the right to give this film a good or bad rating. Let's leave it with that said.😎

reply

7.5 is way too high for that murderer glorifying piece of propaganda called the sniper. So many better films (in every possible way, not just content) have much lower ratings here. Imdb mass vote, sigh. Luckily the more relevant film critics know better.

"Cinema is the most beautiful fraud in the world."

reply

I'm one of that 10 point givers.
What can I say, I loved it.
I am an imdb user for 4 years and you can probably see my votes for other movies.

reply

If we look at your comments (which are only against Turkish people)since you have been a member of imdb, it is obvious that you are a racist who tries to defame Turkey and Turkish people in every opportunity you get with your cheap comments and broken history knowledge. I really wonder why? Let's think. Ta-daaa Found it. Your ancestors : )))))))))))
We Turks have a very famous saying "Barking dog never bites" Did you get the message in it? If you haven't yet, do what you always do. Search for it from the website where you always learn the most precious information. Hahahahahaahah :)

reply

Good point.

It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.

reply

Yes too many of our fellow Turks are "barking dogs." But I don't get your claim the other poster is "racist."
The a fact is nationalism is a sickness in Turkey. That some of the most absurd junk is rated 10/10 is just one little symptom.

Interestingly this film was written by a Greek.

reply

I hate to say it, but I have to say part of it is due to Turkish voters, the other part is due to Australian voters. This film has really been hyped up by the Australian media, and I suppose Australians are happy to see a film made here that isn't absolutely terrible, so they'll give it a 10 for that alone.

It's telling that US voters gave it low ratings. I'm not suggesting that American voters have better taste than voters of another nationality, but that have no reason to be biased towards this film. Also, Rotten Tomatoes has given the film reasonably positive reviews (79% positive with an average rating of 6.8), but nothing particularly enthusiastic.

reply

3 reviews on the metacritic so far and say that the film is just a bit above average. IMDB is just doing what it always does - hence ignore it, as always.

reply

How many films have you seen and rated? I friend of mine at work asked if I have seen The Water Diviner and I told him I walked out after an hour. He said he wished he did too because after an hour it turned into a stupid action film. So I have heard.

1100 films rated and climbing :D

[deleted]

Gee you are quite defensive aren't you? If you bothered to read my comments you would see that I have only ever left three films, this being one of them. The other 1100+ I have seen in entirety and those great films within I have seen over and over.

Sorry to hear about your love for the film but this film was terrible. Its IMDB rating is falling fast which will reflect a more honest review on its poor film making, acting, cast choices and story line.

If the first half of the film is as bad as Police Acadamy 5 (which is was) and the second half (which I didn't see) was as good as The Godfather (which it wouldnt be) then the films rating is still going to what I gave it.

Perhaps you have stupid friends.

reply

Thanks for the constructive criticism, good to see IMDB boards being used to the fullest

reply

I think it's a relevant assumption.

reply

Completely agree. Mawkish inauthentic drivel with an unbelievable plot, stereotypical characters and poor direction. However, it was refreshing to see the Turkish side of the conflict. I sincerely hope they are the source of those amazing number of 10's

reply

Glad you found someone to bash the movie with. Out of all the people who liked it for you to find someone with your take on the movie is pretty awesome.

reply

I just watched The Water Diviner and it totally deserves the high score. Russell Crowe is amazing, I think he made a great debut on directing with this movie. Nice cast, touching story and successfully directed movie..

reply

I am Turkish and well, i rated it high because i finally watched a movie that represents what happened in Turkey objectively, and it is not a Turkish movie. That is the reason i did it and yeah normally, this movie should have 6.5-7.0 on imdb. 8,1 is just too much.

reply

Totally justified score, the movie is beautiful

reply

Watched The Water Diviner last night and while I enjoyed the movie and Mr Crow I have seen better movies that got nowhere near a 10. I don't really like comparing movies as I like to judge movies on their own merit but as IMDB rating is part and parcel of this site I would have thought a 7 for The Water Diviner. Having said that I would recommend it.
