David - fake Marine

Beyond David's obvious bigotry in the film, he's not a realistic Marine. He was called a "soldier" first by his father-in-law to be, then he called his platoon mates in Afghanistan "soldiers." Uh, no. I'm ex-Navy, and I know from experience that Marines are not, nor will they accept, being called "soldier." Not that it's a disparaging term by any means, but that is part and parcel of the Army. Marines are "Marines", not soldiers. Army = Soldier. Navy = Sailor. Air Force = Airman. Marine Corps = Marine. It wouldn't have taken much research to figure that out, lol.

Caught that too. That kind of blunder always pulls me out of the suspension of disbelief for a minute or too. Hard to believe there wasn't a single Marine around the set / related to someone on the film to advise them on this.

To be honest as a Marine their portrayal of the Marine Corps pissed me off. I served five years in the Corps including two tours in Iraq and I can tell you first hand that none of us would give a crap if his fiancée hung out with a transgender girl. Also his ribbon stack was completely wrong for someone who spent "15 months" in Afghanistan. Not to mention the fact that the Marines do 6 month rotations, not 15+ months.

I missed all of that. What annoyed me was his hair. I thought Marines kept their hair much shorter.

It definitely wasn't high and tight.
