Why did they go up on the roof? (Spoilers)

Soooo, the zombies are in the cellar.
The humans decide it's best to run up to the roof, and repel down instead of just walking outside from floor level.

How come?

The zombies scattered about and blocked the exits at the ground floor, I think. Most of the then were in the cellar, but I’m sure some of were in the dark corners in the ground floor too.

They went to the staircase, and happened to end up on the roof, where there was light.

Why don't they just block all the exits and then burn the building down?

It makes no sense that they need to trap them in one room of the cellar.

Or block the exits to the cellar at the top.

I agree, especially since it was daylight. The zombies would have run out of the building en masse into the daylight and be killed, just like the Alpha at the end. I'm finding that there's one scene or plot hole in each and everything I watch now that doesn't make sense or is out of character for person doing it. That's just the way it is.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked this movie, but that plan didn't make sense.

It's kind of the whole problem with the entire zombie movie genre. They either load up on rules which make the zombies unstoppable or they make the survivors do idiotic things.
