Song choices s5 (Roger)

I’m disappointed by the songs used in s5 that Roger sings. The modern 60s song choices are fine, and make sense. The 19th century ones don’t make sense and are a huge disappointment.

The 1960s saw a huge resurgence in folk music, and celtic folk music was a huge part of that. As a historian, and a musically inclined one, at that, I would have expected Roger to have a strong interest in Scottish, English and Irish folk pieces, not “Oh My Darling, Clementine,” which is an American folk song from the 1880s, written about the California gold rush era (1849 and forward).

Roger would have known about Cecil Sharp’s work, collecting “lost” folk songs from English and Scottish residents of Appalachia, who had preserved via oral tradition songs that their antecedents had brought with them from the Old World. These songs had long since been lost in England; Sharp “collected” them to preserve them and in doing so, sort of started the folk revival in the Victorian era.

This was a missed opportunity. I have no idea if this storyline appears in the novels, but even if it does, it would have been amazing if the music team for the series had gone in this direction instead of Clementine.

In the books, Roger is the person who sings at all the gatherings - weddings, funerals, celebrations, everything. He knows many of the songs of the time, and he learns any song anyone will teach him. There are a few scenes where he races home so that he can write down the lyrics before he forgets.

I'm guessing they simply didn't have time to put much of that into the show, though they did have Roger singing in Brownsville.

What was the story behind them singing Clementine? I thought it was because Roger's mom sang that to him as a child.

Thank you so much for responding!

I thought it was because Jemmy liked Clementine the best of all the songs Roger sang. But imo it was not a good choice.

During previous seasons of Outlander I thought the music team had done a great job of using music from the era and culture. But this season was a missed opportunity and a huge disappointment. Now, learning that in the books, Roger was a serious “collector” of cultural (folk) music, makes me even more bummed about this than I was before. I wonder if the writing team chose Clementine, perhaps even against the recommendations of the music team? Ugh.

It really is a huge part of his character, but I think for the tv series, they just don't have time. I always have to try to let go of the book and just watch. There's so much they have to cut. That's just the reality. So if I want to enjoy the show, i have to put those thoughts out of my head. Otherwise, I will always be disappointed.

Honestly, I'm very impressed with how well they are able to bring the story to life, given how little time they actually have to tell it.

If they had just chosen an old world folk song rather than Clementine, I wouldn’t quibble. 😉

I wonder if it was for the basic reason that more people would recognize Clementine, at least American viewers.

Why should that matter? Previously they used the Wool Waulking Song and other Great historical pieces that were very unfamiliar to US viewers.
