Minor (probably) role cast

On another board, someone discovered on a casting agency website, a credit for an actor who will be playing Lt. Hector Dalrymple. He is Lord John's previous love interest. So, the part can't be huge. Interesting that they're going to show him, though.

The credit is listed under the television tab.

Yeah! This would be LJG Culloden flashback, wonder if they brought Oscar back too? or expanded on the LJG & Hal story at Culloden? It would be bits but they have always enhanced the characters stories, LJG & Hal play big parts in the future books, so fitting to give them a proper beginning.

reply

I don't remember that character.

Hector was Lord John's first love and he lost him at Culloden. He thinks about him in Voyager. I'm surprised we will see him, because how are they going to do it? Will Oscar Kennedy be young LJG again then?

reply

They'd almost have to bring Oscar back for that. Even if it's just a memory of LJG's.

My question is why are they wasting time shooting this? It's not really germane to the rest of the story.

reply

Well I for one am happy they will show Hector. I'm not a particular fan of LJG but the more they flesh out his complexities the more likely we are to feel for him. I hope he will be more likable than in the books.

Anyway it'll probably be one or two flashbacks at the most.

The sapphire ring that Hector gave LJG does play a role going forward, twice, when LJG gives it to Bree for their 'engagement' and when he gives it to Jamie for Bree to go back thru the stones. LJG and Hectors story is told in flashbacks in Voyager, as is LJG experience at Culloden. Both inform why/how LJG is so different from the other English Captain that Jamie has had dealings w/, and therefore how Jamie's reactions to LJG are so polarizing to their relationship. We need to understand the LJG & Jamie relationship, it's rocky start, it's ups & downs to understand their life long friendship.

The ring plays a part, not Hector. All we'd have to know is that LJG got the ring from someone special to him.

reply

Okay, I have not read past book four. From what you're saying above, LJG comes to learn that Jamie's relatives can time travel?

reply

He does, but he doesn't really believe it and that's in book 4 iirc.

reply

It's very much a part of John's history and how will you get him as a character if you don't explain his motivations. When he gets to Ardsmuir he's afraid of the Scottish voices, all of them potentially responsible for Hector's death .

reply

I'd like to see a quote from the book where he's afraid of the Scottish voices. I don't remember that at all.

reply

It's in Voyager , chapter 8

And now this. He had dreaded this posting, being surrounded by Scots, by their grating voices, overwhelmed with the memory of what they had done to Hector.

reply

Thanks.

But I still say we don't need to see Hector. There are way too many other things that should be put on screen, but now will have even less of a chance of getting there.

reply

Thanks for that. I remember now. I had forgotten his name.
