Missed the mark on Brianna and Roger

She's 6" taller than Claire and Roger has black hair. The were so exact with jamie and Clair it's like they gave up here

reply

They were only (nearly) exact with Jamie. Claire is supposed to be 5'6" with eyes the color of whisky. Cait is 5'10" with green eyes. I think the actor who plays Roger is definitely pretty close when it comes to matching the physical description.

"How do you know this?"
"That's what I do... I drink, and I know things."

reply

I'd rather had good actors who 90% look like the characters than 100% look like it and suck (and this does not apply to Sophie/Brianna as she was miscast in my opinion, her acting was wooden).

And this comes from 13 years of acting experience, and any layperson like my friend who watched it with me thought she was miscast and "was just reading off the lines".

Courage consists not in hazarding without fear; but being resolutely minded in a just cause.

reply

I like both actors they cast. So far, for me, the casting has been flawless.

reply

IA the casting has been flawless, not only the leads and supporting players but minor characters, too. Magnus, Sir Fletcher, Lt. Foster, Mrs. Crook, all the children. The essence of the character is not in their physical description.

Agreed, ljfav!

Not just that.

Sophie Skelton/Brianna just doesn't work. Every scene she's in feels awkward/wrong.

Is it that she's trying so hard to keep up the accent? Her affect is flat. Her character just comes off as superficial and foolish. I don't know what it is, but very scene she's in dies.

I haven't read the books, but I hope she's not involved in Seasons 3+.

reply

She will be. They're not going to recast Bree. So whether anyone likes her or not, and there are plenty that like her, Sophie is here to stay. We've only seen her in one ep. We don't know how much was the writing, how much was the directing and how much was actually Sophie's acting or a combination of all three. Personally I think a lot of the problem was how the character was written. Bree wasn't that strident in the books.

And people seem to forget that Cait wasn't all that great to start with and has grown into a much better actor. I expect Sophie will do the same.

reply

As I have already said somewhere, Sophie seems insecure... but Briana does feel insecure at this stage (and for some time after) so I does not find she is so bad (not unforgettable either). Stiff yes, but it is in her role.

reply

Superficial and foolish is pretty much how I'd describe Bree at this point in the book, so I guess the casting is spot on. She improves a little I guess but sadly Brianna never becomes much of a layered character in the novels.

I think Sophie is the sweetest. I am looking forward to her in S3, and Maril said they will move some bits of Book 4 forward so her story should get somewhat more interesting.

GRR...ARGH!
