Sophie

Could her bad acting be because she was so focused on the accent? I haven't seen her in anything else to know what she is like in her other roles where she is using her natural accent.
Sadly, some actors are not good at acting while doing a dialect. Not an excuse just wondering if this is the case for why she was so wooden.

I could be really catty and say the casting director owed someone a favor or they were on a time crunch and had to pick anyone for the role of 'Brianna". I hope Sophie used the down time for some extra diction and/or drama coaching. I thought her performance was wooden and "American accent" was forced and very phony. Perhaps if the producer could have sent her to a community college outside of Boston for some theater arts classes for the summer? Total immersion is the best way to learn a language. So many critics and laypersons found her to be the weakest link in the series.

reply

They aren't going to have her do a Boston accent, just a kind of generic American one. I didn't think it sounded too forced most of the time. I live in the Western US and she sounded fine to me. There were a few lines that weren't totally normal sounding, but it wasn't the accent that was wrong, it was more a stilted delivery.

reply

A believable Boston accent for a non Bostonian is next to impossible--I mention outside of Boston--in a college one would come in contact with all sorts of people from all over.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and I thought her "American Accent" was stilted and forced and fake. Maybe Sophie just needed some immersion language schooling and more script reading time.

reply

Blake Lively was able to fool Ben Affleck in her auditions for "the Town". He asked her what part of Boston was she from. That is how good she was.
I'm fine with no Boston accent as long as her American basic accent is good, and not forced. Also, getting back to my main question do you think her acting went sour due to her focusing on the accent?

Courage consists not in hazarding without fear; but being resolutely minded in a just cause.

reply

In my opinion, I would say yes on both counts. I didn't think her acting was any good. She pretty much just recited words on a piece of paper, like a 12 year old giving a book report in front of class, and her forced accent made it worse. I am not a movie critic or an actress or a film director. I have studied elocution, speech, and drama for almost 15 years.

I also live in the PNW and I just didn't think her accent was fake sounding. Her delivery was off at times, but the first time I watched I didn't notice much of that. I notice more each time I watch, but now I'm looking for forced and stilted. The accent is still okay, to my ears. I guess we all see and hear differently.
She is our Brianna so we are going to need to look and listen beyond what we don't like. She does have lots of time to improve, as Bree won't be in Season 3 very much. Maybe they can get extra coaching for her.

I agree, I watched with this with both my friend and my mom and they both didn't like her acting. (they haven't read the book so they were just talking about acting in general, laypersons who regularly watch TV, who interact with human beings on a daily basis can spot phoniness a mile away and I think it came through. I rather they focus on having an actor who can act than someone how looks like Sam/Cait (aside from eye color or height which she didn't have). Peter Dinklage doesn't look like Tyrion in Game of Thrones, but he is amazing in that role. I remember when I watched the Outlander finale with a friend an in the middle, particularly the scene when they are at the lake, she commented and said that Brianna was a bad actress. It doesn't take too long to spot these kinds of things. And the key word she used was "wooden", just like many other people. My friend said she was very, very amateur.

I'm in a group of found nothing wrong with Sophie... Wish she was tall as Sam so we can get the, "You're Huge"

Her accent isn't the problem. She could be from Boston. Even Ben Affleck doesn't have Boston accent as such. Hers is actually a fine accent: I thought she was a bad American actress, not a bad British actress affecting an American accent.

The problem is her acting, or lack thereof. Did she not rehearse? Did the accent force all the expression out of her performance? Is the script subpar? Did they shoot it in one take?

It's all very bizarre, because she's the only person in this entire series who dropped the ball. (The only other actor I had a problem with was the French waif-- his accent/acting was subpar, but he's a child actor.)

When watching her I really thought I was seeing someone who had never had a role before (she knew someone?) and/or had just read the script. But, no, she has a solid list of credits to her name. How is it possible that she could deliver such a terrible performance?

Disappointing she was cast in such an important role. It really detracts from e important scenes in the season finale. Hopefully, we aren't going to see much more of her (I havent read the books).

How was Cait bad? I only remember one line and that was it.

reply

Cait was equally as bad in the beginning and look how brilliant she turned out.

I keep seeing posters say this. I never felt she was bad at the beginning. The only think I remember not liking when I started to watch was the voiceover. I found it bit annoying. But then they either toned it back or I stopped noticing it.

At the start she was a bit wooden for me, she seemed to have two facial expressions and one tone of voice.

Pretty much this. And if RDM et al thought she was so great they wouldn't have hired an acting coach for her.

reply

In her defence, she does have the added pressure of not using her natural accent.

Yes, that must affect her speach and a posh accent can sound a bit monotone.

reply

LOL Romann's accent was bad? You do know he's french right? That was his natural accent.
