Just watched Underworld: Blood Wars.. An observation regarding Tobias

And I'd like to express my thoughts on the movie:

I wanted to watch this movie in theaters, but I missed it. Yes, I thought this movie would release on the same day as in the US. Turns out, it released in India (Dec 2nd) a month prior to US (Jan 6th). So, I missed it, and I finally got the chance to watch it today, and I did.

With very high expectations, obviously because Tobias playing the villain and Anna Foerster (The Wedding episode director) directing the movie, I am utterly disappointed.

Direction was bad (very) to say the least. It seemed like the actors are reading the dialogues from the script.. there's no pause between the lines. I was more disppointed by this fact because the director was Anna, who directed 'The Wedding'.
Also, the script was very bad..
Screenplay was bad too: Seemed like no scene in the film lasted more than a minute (except for the fight scenes).

With all that gone, I'd like to point out my observation on Tobias; I observed this on Outlander too.
In Outlander Season 2, after Tobias made his appearance as BJR in episode 4 (was it?), I observed that his voice changed a bit. Like he's got some problem with his throat. I dismissed the thought.. because I thought that he was maybe trying this new voice to make BJR look more villainous.. or maybe that BJR suffered an attack from the bulls, and Tobias wanted to bring in an aspect that his voice changed.. or something of sorts. Turns out, Tobias has got the same voice in the movie too.
Did anyone else notice that? That his voice changed?

Thank you.

Do you mean S1 vs. S2? He first shows up in ep 6 of S1, and 5 in S2. I don't think I've noticed.

I kind of want to see that movie, but have low expectations because of the last one.

I'm sorry I am confused.... wasn't Tobias in almost every Episode of the first half of Season 1 of Outlander? AND Tobias was in the first Episode Of Season 2... agreeing to be a father to her baby by another man ..?

Did i misunderstand ?

Sorry, by 'he' I meant Black Jack.

Oh Ok, but Black Jack appeared in the first and second episode of Season 1A.. and In the Garrison Commander and the Season 1A Finale. he was all over season 1A and 1B ... but yes, Episode 4 or 5 of season 2, but he did make Cameo appearances in season 2 before he actually did show up in Paris. With Jamie and the blood.... and when Frank comes near Claire in the hospital.

reply

Yep, but those were flashbacks mostly. Ep 1 was the only real time appearance before 6...if I remember right.

BJR in Episode 2 was a real time appearance, because it was Jamie's memory and a new scene. That scene of jamie's flogging and Jenny with BJR, was an integral part of the story and the show would not have made sense without it!

the repeated showings of Frank and The Reverend talking about "the Duke of Sandringham" were more of a flashback...IMO

Even the scene with Jamie and BJR in bed with all the blood was a NEW scene and even though BJR doesn't show up still Episode 5, Tobias is listed in the opening credits in Episode 201...

BTW, I re watch old programs on demand, to put me to sleep and Season 1 and 2 of Outfielder and The white Queen are at the top of the list!

reply

Oh, stop bragging. And if they do not air memories, etc. in chronological order, they are flashbacks, no matter how important.
Memories are after all, moments from the past! Dreams...it was BJR's face on Claire's body, so I don't count it; it was only a vision. Yes, he technically appears in the episodes, but it's not physically. It's not like he's actually there. Watch enough fantasy and you will know the difference.

On the way, I saw five hours of sleep - but your fire makes it all worth while.

What was I bragging about!!? Being wrong is no Reason to get snarky!!!!

Maybe you know the answer to this, Krish, because it's been "bothering" me ever since I heard that Tobias Menzies was doing this movie. I've seen the first two and they were alright for the vampire/werewolf type of movie...I enjoyed them for what they were. For the life of me though, I can't figure out what Menzies is doing in a horror/supernatural type of movie series. He comes off as way too
highbrow for this. Did he ever say why he chose to do this type of movie? I've only seen the trailers and to me, he just looks and sounds like Black Jack with his hair loose and a different "uniform". 😕

Hi bunny-39952. He did Underworld 5 because, Anna Foerster, the director, recruited him. They both acknowledged that she liked working with him on Outlander and brought him into the project. I'm sure Tobias knew the film was mediocre although he's too much of a professional to ever say so; however, he follows a lot of first-rate English actors, including Charles Dance and the great Derek Jacobi, who swallowed their pride and worked on this franchise.

Thanks, digitaldiva...and I hope I don't come off as some kind of snob. It just kind of surprised me...but I know that jobs are hard to come by for actors who may be immensely talented but not the "flavor of the month"...and I hope that doesn't come off snobbish either. It was an awkward question, but I hope you know what I mean by asking it.

reply

Hi bunny, I didn't think your comment was snobbish at all. As crappy as the Underworld films are, and they are crappy, they allow an actor to learn aerial work and motion-capture performance. Although Tobias had a higher profile than the other principals, Outlander opened up a number of projects for him. He's presently working on a show for AMC and after that, I don't know what projects he'll be doing. I have heard that he's in demand.

reply

I am glad for him...strike while the iron's hot.🙂

That is so true, Actors can't afford to be to snobbish or they won't work!!
My friend said she thought that winning the Oscar assured an actor of future work and high salaries, but after many actors win the Oscar you never hear of them again.... The actor business is fickle and you have to stay out there to stay relevant... And Most actors like to do different and versatile roles to challenge themselves. One shouldn't get stuck in a type.

reply

I agree, Dwinn, winning an Oscar is no key to success, but being open to all types of projects is. I think Tobias will be working for years to come.

reply

No, I'm not asking why he chose to do this movie, it is obvious why, as digitaldiva explained.

I was wondering if anyone noticed the change in the voice? His voice was fine in Season 1 when he played BJR.. even in season 2 when he played Frank in the premiere. It changed in episode 5 when he played BJR. You know, our voice changes a bit for a short period when we get serious cold..? that sort of change. He's got the same voice in episode 12.. and in the movie too.
