What Happened At The Very End?

The Doc wakes up and calls for his wife and daughter which are not around and then sees the picture of young Christine. Did Zellis take Christine and the daughter to start a new brood?

reply

Christine was actually a Zellis the whole time. And she was just duping the doctor. That was the twist ending.

The Doctor wasn't killed, so it's a bit curious. I don't know if they (The Zellis's) are going to a new town, or if they expect him to just hangout and continue being the local doc, or what. I wish it hadn't been so ambiguous because, though the twist was a nice touch, it left things a little too vague.

The movie does a pretty rubbish job of explaining what's going on. Apparently, his wife and daughter were taken and imprisoned underground. There's a sequel to the novel this movie's based on.

In the very last seconds, the Doc picks a broken frame up from the floor and in it is a photo of the young Christine, presumably in front of her family's home. She's standing next to the street-side mailbox which clearly has the family name on it: Zellis. So it appears we are to believe that she was always a Zellis and this was her life plan or destiny or some such thing and the doc and Jessie were somehow just pawns. I had to replay that little bit a second time to see more clearly what was in the photo and that that moment thought ... this is a pretty good twist ending. :-)

Those who were REALLY paying attention might have noticed that Dean Stockwell's son had earlier been looking at that picture and muttered something about how important little details could be. For some reason I caught that remark and assumed it meant there was something significant about the picture, so I was ready to look for it when I got the chance. Evidently Stockwell's son (whatever his name was) knew who and what Christine was. Why he didn't tell the doc is just another unanswered question or piece of baffling behavior by a character (or just cruddy writing).

This was my first time watching this movie. I actually thought this movie is really good. Christine the docs wife was actually a Zellis to begin with and what I took from the ending is that what Christine was supposed to do was marry a doctor and bring him to the small town where they all were and he was supposed to be the doctor for them. I am guessing he will be the doctor for them until he dies or finds a way to escape. The way the ending is also tells me that far more than likely that there will be a sequel.

The sexual should be him getting out of town, buying a crap load of guns. Going back there and just laying waste to the whole town.

So was the mid wife Christine's mother?

reply

That would be my guess that the mid wife is Christine's mother.

I thought I recalled her "Zellis" saying something about her "NIECE". So I thought that Christine was her niece. I am not sure though. There was so much going on.

reply

Christine told her husband that Lady Zellis' daughter died. So I think your correct, in that Christine is her niece.
