Why won't Ivo leave for Estonia?

Really good movie, and it has stayed with me for several days since watching it! Maybe I missed a line or something, but what was the reason Ivo wouldn't go to Estonia? Did they ever state a reason or was the viewer just supposed to use their imagination...

The reason he gives and the real reason are likely two different things. There are clues.

I thought it was because his family were buried there and he didn't want to leave them. His son died to protect the land and so he didn't want to just abandon it.
