Daniel

I get that Marek/Rouslan was looking for a father figure...but there was nothing in the film that suggested Daniel was looking to become someone's parent/guardian type figure.

I don't understand why he stopped sleeping with him and kicked him into the spare room.

Yeah my thoughts too. I liked the film but the one frustration I had was the under-development of that shift in Daniel's feelings for the lad. It wasn't written or explained that well and it let the film down a bit IMO.

Desperanto spoken here...

He stopped sleeping with him because he no longer saw him "that way." Once Marek told him the story of Rouslan, Daniel could no longer see him as an object, but as a person: Rouslan. He couldn't sleep with an orphan who'd had a terrible life.

It's up to you to decide if that switch is believable or not, but I think that's what the director was going for.

Thanks for that information. The video I watched had no subtitles whatsoever so I had to go on my VERY limited knowledge of French. Based on that, I figured Daniel "confined" Marek to the other room because he didn't think Marek felt the same way about him as he did. Throughout the film it was always Daniel showing affection while Marek just sat back and took. He never really showed any semblance of feelings toward Daniel; their "relationship" came off as being mainly a business transaction to him. He kept coming back but I figured it was just because he needed the money--even though the exchange of money was never shown after that initial hook up--or he wanted to atone for his "sin" of cleaning out Daniel's flat in the first place.

I also considered the fact that he kept spending time with Daniel, hoping he'd eventually replace the stolen goods so he could inform Boss and they could rob Daniel again. But after his banishment to the guest room (he looked so hurt) and his bout of PTSD during the fireworks I realized something else was going on with him and maybe he really did enjoy Daniel's company. In the end I was happy he redeemed himself by trying to recover some of the goods from Boss.

He didn't try to recover any goods. He was trying to get his passport back because Boss was keeping it. In no way does he try to get Daniel's things back to him, not during the 4th chapter or at any other point in the movie. I'm guessing you confused Marek trying to get his passport back with him trying to get Daniel's stuff back.

I prefaced my earlier comment with the following: "The video I watched had no subtitles whatsoever so I had to go on my VERY limited knowledge of French." So thank you for explaining that aspect of the plot to me.

I hope to find an English-subtitled version of the movie so I can watch it again.

There is a version with subs on one of the gay torrent sites, if you know of them. In fact, the vid has 12 subtitles. Site ends in .net.

Thanks for the info. I'll attempt to find it.
