Wasn't this Bruce Campbell's idea?

He probably wants to do his own version, he said he wanted to direct it.

You cannot patent an idea. There you go. He had the idea years ago. He should have done something with it. Now he's not even involved in the project. :(

The article I read (which then lead me here) credited the idea to the guy who originally played Leatherface. I feel like no matter whose idea it is/was it's an amazing one and Bruce Campbell has definitely earned the right to be in it somewhere.
