the critics did not like it, many people i know hated it.. how come it is rated 7.9 here? if this is genuine rating, i have to say - indian audiences continue to amaze me... they will love anything.. they will love stupid but entertaining movies like chennai express and ram-leela.. they will love boring and highly pretentious movies like highway.. when will people learn to appreciate really good cinema and art?

If you're talking about good cinema and art, just go for hollywood. They named it Bollywood because they can't make it as hollywood.

It's really fascinating when people tell others what they should like. I mean movies are meant to entertain people too and if they got entertained then seriously there's no point questioning them. You didn't like it. Great. Criticize the movie and what you didn't like about it, don't go on criticizing audience, people and judgement they make.
There must be a guy who doesn't like your kind of movie and thinks that who likes these pseudo intellectual stuffs, why can't they watch my favorite movies or read books and enjoy the real beauty instead of watching some random images moving sequentially.
Oh I liked the movie by the way, it was a bit stretched but captivating nonetheless.
Just because you and your friends didn't like it doesn't mean that it is 'boring'. It generally recieved positive reviews from the critics and yes you are right 7.9? How could they give this exceptional piece of art a 7.9 only? I loved every second of this movie and would even give it a 10 but i would not want to judge others just because they disagree with my opinion.
Its a disgrace comparing Highway to movies like Ramleela and Chennai Express. Even thinking about Chennai Express makes me cringe.
I am a person who appreciates Hollywood more because of their intellectual nature, their direction and since they don't assume audience to be dumb (most of the time). But Bollywood on occasions do produce movies which I enjoy.
My only regret would be that I couldn't watch Highway on theater! Alia Bhatt being a newbie was a refreshing face and the direction was spectacular. I think one of the other things I like about this movie were road trips. They seemed so familiar, like I was myself traveling with them!
Also, Music by A.R. Rehman! Spectacular.

So purely entertaining films are wrong but more serious films are wrong too? You think Highway isn't good cinema?? Then you don't know what good cinema is (hint: it's independent of personal tastes). Also putting Chennai Express and Ram Leela in the same category is laughable.
And this has nothing to do with being Indian or not (I'm not).

I gave it 7, only for two points the ending and how convincing the relationship between the two lead characters was
i didn't enjoy every second of it but it was worth my respect
i am not Indian and i only started watching bollywood recently, always thought it was more like Science Fiction where the lead character will fly all the time
but got the chance to watch a couple of movies and i liked them
their Comedy is very good, not a lot of Hollywood Comedy are that good for me
i still don't like their Action movies but i like the scenes in Indian nature, pretty refreshing
and there is really good cinema and art but it differs, Hollywood has a lot of bad cinema and art just like any other country and i personally know a lot of friends who are sick of Hollywood and follow European cinema instead.
It is never about what happened, it is only how you look at it!
