Did they make these movies back-to-back?

This sequel came out only a year after the original, which is quick for any sequel, but especially an animated one. Most animated sequels come out at least 3 years after each previous installment, such as the Shrek films (2001, 2004, 2007, 2010). Also, there were 5 years between the 2 Cars films.

Yes. They planned a trilogy so they must have been working on them simultaneously.

They were undoubtedly working on this before the first one was released in theaters. Aside from that animators can crank it out quickly nowadays. The imagery looks good but I haven't seen much of the animation yet. These are cars and it doesn't take much to render them versus something like a human character from Up or a highly detailed Wall-E.

It's one of the same reasons why The Lego Movie only cost 60 million to make, they didn't have to make it look real they just had to make them look like Legos.

LOL
It can take much more time to render the fire effects or the reflection on a car than a human character. It's all about the details, you can have a very detailed car or a poorly designed human too.

Well despite the amount of fire in the movie it still wasn't constantly in the movie. On top of that it still doesn't take as long to render fire as it does, humans/fur that were constantly in other movies.

There was a 3 year overlap between the two movies - Planes: Fire & Rescue took 4 years to create.
