Are the humans all dead?

Where are they?

The planes have instrument panels.. built for who to see?

Who the heck built these self-aware machines?

Will there be a prequel where all this is explained?

The thought of seeing these cute planes overthrowing their human creators and ridding the world of human beings fills me with glee.

LOL
Are you serious?

It's the same world as Cars, no humans here. And yes they can read, speak, build and see whatever they want, it's a movie not our poor reality.

For some reason this universe seemed a lot more consistent in the first Cars than in this movie.

It's really best not to dwell on that, the only real answer is: "It's a kid's movie, suspend your disbelief and have fun".

I can only suggest to read about the pixartheory here: http://www.pixartheory.com/

this theory says that all pixar movies are in the same universe, every pixar movie tying together the next one. it also explains why there are no humans.

The old helicopter said it at the campfire, they ate the humans.
