Want some opinions on ending.

I absolutely loved everything about this show don't get me wrong it really is a masterpiece and one of my favorite shows i have ever seen up there with fargo. Just want to know people's feeling and theories as to why he took the next job. I mean in the season they clearly show he is a good guy and never really wanted to do anything wrong. Yet he was a great soldier and was accurate etc I just don't see how after everything he has went through to then have it all come together at the bar that the broker was behind QUAN THANG etc that he would ever agree to continue to work with him. I obviously saw the broker trying to work on him and make him admit he enjoys "war" cause he knows to some extent he liked kicking ass with his brothers when it was for a noble reason atleast. I just don't see how seeing he was behind such horrible stuff and what it did to all those men then how his best friend was killed because of his agenda all this awful stuff. How just because you felt important enjoyed aspects of being a soldier and doing good you would work for evil itself to continue that feeling. If you craved action or justice after he could start his own thing and take out awful people and make memphis a better place as opposed to helping the broker the man who made everything in his life *beep* helping him become more powerful by taking out people in his way make sense. It would make more sense for him to want to kill the broker and do his own vigilante type thing if war was what he needed.

Just thoughts would love others.

Don't get me wrong i'm aware that most people figure the show couldn't continue if he stopped working for him but it technically could just they would have to go a different way.

Quarry simultaneously loves and hates doing it. Just like with war. It's the thrill, the feeling you're alive, and since the war messed him up, it's one of the few feelings he has left inside of him.

Besides that it's fairly easy money if you're careful. Remember this is before cameras on every street corner and camera phones. Without eyewitnesses or leaving physical traces. Shells, cigarette butts, actual weapons; you're in good shape.
As the other poster mentioned the thrill, he's very good at it ( look how easily he killed his wife's lover ) and these are not particularly innocent people.

War and combat heightened his senses so much that anything after it leaves him feeling empty. Working for The Broker has given him back the thrill of the chase and the uncertainty of the mission. Plus the kill of course. He feels alive again. Hell, he feels again. At least that's how I saw it.

Quarry doesn't know that The Broker was behind Quan Thang. He thought it was the Captain.

I liked the ending. It closed the narrative threads, while keeping things open for a second season.

reply

Correct, and having the Broker arrange for the two to meet in the bar offered Quarry a change for retribution against a guy who lied to him (and essentially made him a murderer), but also left the chance that Quarry would kill the Captain, which means that the Broker wouldn't have to pay him for commanding his men to wipe out the village AND helps tie up a loose end with regard to that event.

reply

that could be very easily be re-complicated,
Quarry could meet some other soldier who saw the Broker at Nam, etc.

reply

Oh if is definitely a contrived/convenient ending.

i also liked the show very much- right through and including the finale. episode 1 was extraordinary. but, i didn't really get it either.

the broker (i guess highly ranked military?) arranged the QT massacre in order to get his hands on opium so .. he could get rich? by selling it to .... hicks and hillbillies in tennessee after he first has the existing dealers whacked? and he needs quarry or his buddy to do it BECAUSE they were at QT? then who was the guy with the missing leg, the original hit they *beep* up coz that took like 4 eps?

how about moses? did he return the money to the broker or abscond?

meh, now i'm thinking too much, i still enjoyed it. very good production.
