What happened in season finale? Why did he swim like that in the end?

There was a scene in Vietnam when he was telling Arthur he was going to do it and Arthur was telling him he couldn't make it across. They made a 100 dollar bet. I guess he was reminiscing about that.

And, when he opened the shave pouch Broker gave him, he found it contained a hundred dollar bill. It made him think back to that bet. He just had to do it for himself and Arthur. Previous pouches from Broker contained a bunch of cash along with a .45cal pistol and a name. Why did Broker leave only a $100, was he aware of the bet somehow ? Broker has a way of taking Quarry back to the Nam days.

people try that all the time and they get like half way and have to be rescued by a boat. they say unless you like mike phelp you can't do it
