Is it just me?

Am I the only one who loved this film? Yeah the ending could have been a little better but I thought as a whole it was a really original story! Acting was brilliant and the cinematography was beautiful, it wasn't exactly the best film of 2014, but surely it's worth more than a 6.8?

Please share your thoughts :).

I enjoyed the story line. The pacing was pretty good and kept me interested.
Dan Stevens played a terrific psychopathic character. It's a good film. I don't much care about ratings.

I've been recommending it to all my friends.

Same here :) glad you've said that! He played the role so well!

total agreement

It was one of my favorite movies of 2014. It's up there with 'Gone Girl' and 'Nightcrawler,' in terms of entertainment value and rewatchability. I also enjoyed 'Predestination' and 'The Equalizer' a ton, for similar reasons.

Another great reply! Gone Girl was great! Had me guessing the whole time. The Equaliser and Nightcrawler were both awesome as well! 2014 wasn't a bad year for films!

I think some people just don't appreciate certain kinds of movies. I really liked how it started off like a serious psychological thriller with something ominous happening underneath, and then turned into an action/horror movie. It reminded me a lot of 'From Dusk Till Dawn,' in that respect. It also reminded me a lot of the amazing film, 'Stoker,' another movie about a mysterious 'guest' with questionable morals/intentions, showing up to stay with a family.

reply

Completely get what you are saying. I wasn't a massive fan of Stoker, but I can appreciate it for what it was.

reply

I thought Gone Girl was absolutely brutal. It had some very bad acting and was completely unrealistic, especially the ending. That's ok for action, sci fi, or horror, but a crime drama?

I can understand not liking it, but bad acting? From who?

Affleck and the people who played her parents came off like they were on prescription drugs after the character's disappearance. There wasn't a single tear shed on her behalf. Their reactions were not realistic in the slightest.

Pike herself went back-and-forth from really good to really bad. There isn't an ounce of believability in anything the characters says and all those cops but one bought it? No was Jose. Even before we know she was nuts, she shared that "high" demeanor the others showed. She spoke bizarrely. It was very slow and deliberate, if not robotic. She didn't act like a real person, let alone a person people would sympathize with.

The only people I thought that gave a natural performance were the actress who played Affleck's sister and Tyler Perry.

Amy's parents were cold sons of b******. Their caracters were build like that. They looked like they only care about retrieving Amy so she could continue to write her books and make money for them or make them feel popular and proud of being amazing Amy's parents. At least, I interpreted their role like that...I'm pretty sure they have a deeper meaning though.

"No trouble, kids stuff..."

It is "just you".

Just finished it and I liked it a lot. Nice to see movies change things up and not be afraid to kill of anyone

reply

You must not watch a lot of Asian films – Korean, in particular. They'll kill off any character, even a main character, within the first ten minutes of a film.

reply

Not any that I've seen

I liked it- it was fast paced, exciting, the acting was good and i liked the backing soundtrack.

Hopefully you're the only one. I don't want to have to worry anymore then I already do about the collective intelligence of society.

This was a "B" movie and after the halfway point it started going downhill. I hope military police aren't that incompetent in real life.

I see Stupid People...

reply

Well of course they aren't that stupid in real life (mostly), thats why this is a movie we are talking about and not real life...

Agreed, thought this was one of the more enjoyable movies of 2014. The cinematography was indeed great, the directing was top-notch and the acting was way better than what you'd expect from these kind of movies with small nuances in the delivery of the lines from all the actors, including 'the two kids'. Also, I've never seen Downton Abbey, but Dan Steven is/should be a star in the making. That's one good-looking guy with tons of charisma and the acting skills to match.

Ok, in the 3th act the movie went completely bananas. I understand some people didn't go along with it, so it's kinda love it or hate it. But personally I thought it was a fun homage to the genre and it didn't ruin the movie for me at all.

I enjoyed the movie as well. Totally agree about the ending that it could have been much better! Do you guys have suggestions for other movies like this? I was really hoping that David would turn out to be a good guy because what he was doing for the family was actually helping them. Killing people obviously wasn't the right way to go about helping Caleb's family though.

reply

I actually really enjoyed it. Didn't expect to, but it did actually surprise me. I dunno what I was expecting, but certainly not this.

Really enjoyable. Actually did see that ending coming :)

It was great! Glad I'm not the only one ;)

I loved it too.
