This was supposed to be a comedy, right?

Even at that, it was absolutely terrible, but there were definitely scenes that were unintentionally funny. The thumbs up scene at the end...I had to bust up laughing. Crap, just absolute crap.

reply

Those scenes were intentionally funny. Similar to the last film of the writer/director, "You're Next."

You should have figured out the silly tone by the opening credits, where 'THE GUEST' popped up with dramatic purple letters with accompanying dramatic music.

reply

Yeah, the letters/colors were bad alright. Even if it has the pretention to belong to a specific genre, I don't get it. Why make a stupid movie on purpose..? Because it's a new, interesting genre? Because people are bored with uhm... okay/good/great movies? Because there isn't enough cr@p out there in the theaters..?

Making a movie that's supposed to be a B-movie from its conception but that still looks like it takes itself seriously... I really don't see the point.

An Ed Wood movie is funny because he put his guts out there, and he was serious.
But making a ridiculous movie on purpose is taking stupidity to another level...

"Man, it was so bad it was actually good, and I loved it!!"
Er, okay...

Satire, anyone? There's absolutely nothing bad with making some ridiculous on purpose. Pulling it off well is well crafted comedy!

Some scenes were definitely supposed to be funny, kinda sounds like it went over your head. The bit at the end where they had to go through the haunted house was my favorite part (as well as the mirror room reference to Enter the Dragon), but I love when horror mixes in humor and doesn't hit you over the head with it (a la Scary Movie.)

Its called dark humor.

reply

Sounds like you laughed at scenes that were intentionally funny. In which case, maybe you thought the movie was unintentionally funny but you actually unintentionally liked it without realizing it.

reply

This film is a dark comedy, if you didn't realize that, you're an idiot.

reply

The Guest is more of a subtle parody than a blatant one and so obviously some people will find it difficult to tell if it's deliberately being funny or falls into the "so bad it's funny" territory, especially if unfamiliar with previous works. doesn't make them idiots though

The Guest is meta and yes its a genre

reply

What is it parodying exactly though? I've read this statement several times but nobody has been able to elaborate. I'm usually good at seeing what a movie is mocking, but seems to be basically a genuine effort to turn in a thriller (until the ending)

reply

You totally missed the point and probably aren't familiar with the director and his work like you're next. All his stuff is blackly comedic.

reply

I thought it was a good homage to John Carpenter movies.

It felt like it could have been made before Escape from New York, I could imagine Kurt Russell in the lead when he was younger.

It had an interesting premise, good suspense, a not obvious twist towards the end, a decent action sequence, a solid cast that had a charismatic lead, good supporting actors, and all of that was bought and paid for with a budget that was around 5 million. Hell, it even had a cool soundtrack.

I've seen movies with budgets 20x's that and have crapped the bed.

reply

Watching this right now and starting to get the same vibe. Especially with the music. John Carpenter.

It was obvious from the get-go that it was going to get messy. There weren't any unintentionally funny scenes - you were supposed to laugh at them. The last 20 mins were hilarious; plus how many movies end with "what the *beep*

You've probably read most of the posts on this board by now - go re-watch the movie.
