You need spoilers

I won't write anything that might spoil the story, but I wish someone had explained this story better. It was very unclear to me. There are a few critical things that we need to understand that I was totally clueless about until I read forum discussions and a review. I have seen most of the movie and I still do not understand what/who "The Girl in the Book" is.

Okay, I guess it won't spoil things if I point out something in the credits. Note that Emily VanCamp is Alice Harvey and Ana Mulvoy-Ten is "Young Alice". The movie fails to make that clear and the two actresses look very different.

I am so glad you explained that. I stopped watching as I fell asleep. Woke up this morning and came on here to see if it was worth my while to go on. I completely thought they were two different people. I get when your young your hair can be more blonde but there was not any resemblance between the 2 at all.

I don't think anyone can actually pay attention to the movie and NOT realize that the younger and older characters are the same Alice. And that the when older Alice finally writes the book the title refers to her younger self.

Well, TxMike, you have two people here that say otherwise. Criticisms such as yours are extremely easy to throw about. If you have nothing more useful to say then it is better to say nothing.

reply

Sam, I do have something useful to say, if you are willing to listen. If you, or anyone else, watched this movie and didn't realize that the two actresses were playing the same character, at different ages, then you could benefit from reflecting a bit on your viewing habits. It is easy to fall into a "half-attention" state and miss important aspects of a movie. In this case perhaps THE most important aspect because, as you now know, the story doesn't make sense otherwise.

My point is, why waste 90 to 120 minutes watching a movie if you don't plan to pay attention to all of its aspects? Spend your time doing something else.

I am very willing to listen if you had something useful to say but you don't.

Don't be a bully, Sam.
I agree with TxMike.

I knew by the first scene with Young Alice that they were the same character.
I thought, "They could have casted people who looked more similar," but it never crossed my mind to think they weren't the same person. It's very obvious if you pay attention. And I'm watching it now and on here so I'm only half paying attention and I got it immediately.

So I'm thinking the two opinions on here saying otherwise might actually be the minority, but happen to be the ones who spoke up.

I agree completely, I could tell in the first scene with young Alice they were the same person, too. They don't look anything alike, I agree, but the way the scenes are cut makes it obvious, imo, and the conversations young Alice and old Alice have with everyone else make it even more obvious.
