An overlooked masterpiece.....deserves a cult status

Okay, I know I know what the critics say. It is predictable, a tad too long, Kashyap indulges himself a bit too much in his film references, the plot is hazy and then too simplistic and the actors could have been used in better ways.

But did you all not notice the numerous great things? The meticulous art direction- from the streets to the panoramic views of the city- from the glizy club to the grimy cage fights? The amazing visuals, the sheer breadth of the narrative- leaping from timelines to locations with such effortless ease? The instantly quotable dialogue, the spectacular jazz songs and the mind blowing music? The iron-fisted direction of Kashyap that makes it all memorable despite its predictablity, the inevitability of the material?

Sometime, in the future, this movie will be hailed as a wronged masterpiece. I am sure it will happen.

I completely agree.

Indeed. I remember reading Gyan Prakash' opinion on the film and he said that it was fab- he also explained why Indian movie goers doomed it. It was because the mainstream people thought it will be a candy floss romance between its glamorous leads- the art audience expected it to be like Wasseypur and when the film ended up being none of them but something completely different- the people felt floored and rather inexplicably.

It is a damn great film.

Being a kashyap fan,the movie in my opinion is a modern day scarface with the audience not realising what a masterpiece the movie is....
Personal highlight for me are some of the genius shots especially the last shot he took in the reflection of the spoon...
The truth is, only and only kashyap could execute such a movie with such sheer storytelling.

Well said. The shot that you talked about is indeed marvelous. I also love the shot of the reflection of Bombay Velvet in the puddle in the rain. Stunning shot!
I am really surprised at how coldly the music was received. True, it is not as flashy as some of the music in other Kashyap films but if you listen to the tracks along with the scenes, the impact is really everlasting. I did not originally like the 'Behroopia' track but after seeing the subtle way it was captured on screen, fell in love with it. Same goes for 'Naak Pe Gussa'- sounded like a mild ballad to me initially but plays great in the film. I love the opening song as well- it hooks me immediately.

Amit Trivedi is a genius. Anurag Kashyap and Trivedi make a great great team.

Plus border line gay character of karan johar was masterfully portrayed...
The movie is a gem far ahead of its time, too bad the audience isn't matured enough for it.
Anurag Kashyap can do no wrong.
Period!
