Is Venice relevant for the film?

It's Alex of Venice, but what exactly is the relevance of that setting that would justify the title?

Her name is Alex. She grew up and still lives in Venice, California. Nothing more relevant than that.

I get her name is Alex, but when you choose to name a film "Alex of Venice" it sounds like Venice is going to play an important or distinctive part in the plot, like "Lawrence of Arabia" and so on.

I know this is an older post but Mary Elizabeth Winstead said they didn't have a title for the movie well into the shooting. They just decided on that name over other ones that were suggested, so basically the name has no meaning.

Even I watched the movie, I didn't know it's in California until now :)

we Europeans now Venice as the city of Italy.. and I expect a love movie takes place in Italy.. but it didn't.. and I thought what a weird name to pick for an American movie...

even if that's where she lives, I don't like the name of the movie...
and most people know Alex as a dude name :) like Alexander...
