What were your favorite scenes or quotes from the movie?

My favorite scenes were when Violette always received encouragement to NOT give up her writing, but to keep writing because writing is what was going to make her happy & successful.

The fact that she refused to give up on her dreams of becoming well-known & respected as an author is phenomenal.

My favorite scenes were when she delivered her manuscript to her first, when she was seen signing her books & smiling once she had become well-known, & finally, the scene where she moves from her cramped apartment to that old house in the French countryside @ the end of the movie.

Favorite quotes were the ones where she's told to keep writing. 

I have not watched enough of this movie yet to choose a favorite quote. However, being only a minute into the movie (literally) I feel it necessary to point out a problem in the subtitles of the opening quote. I'm watching it on Netflix and immediately recognized that what I was hearing spoken in french did not match up with what I was reading in the English subtitles. So, upon looking into the script of the film I found that the movie Violette opens with a quote taken directly from the main character's real life writings, author Violette Leduc. She says in French, "Ugliness in a woman is a mortal sin. If you’re beautiful, you turn heads for your beauty. If you’re ugly, you turn heads for your ugliness.” On the Netflix subtitles, the first words translated for us begin with the second and third sentence of the three sentences. Thus dramatically changing the context of what she has said by leaving out the harsh judgement- the biblical proportion of judgement- against women who are considered physically ugly. It would be interesting to know if this is simply a mistake by Netflix, in the English subtitles, or if it deliberately left out for the American audience.

Did you like or hate the movie?

I found it weird.

I liked; however, that she refused to give up on her writing & kept plowing along until FINALLY she was met w/success.

I think it's one of the movies you honestly DO need to watch twice.

Simply because the way the movie unfolds @ the beginning is rather odd and definitely NOT like ANY movie I've ever seen before.

I do like the underlying meaning behind the movie.

That in spite of Violette's lack of confidence, she still overcomes her obstacles & perseveres.

Granted there's a lot of extra garb in the movie that was pointless; esp. near the end.

However, getting rid of the extra scenes and focusing strictly on her writing & her passion for her writing are the parts of the movie that resonated w/me & made me like THOSE parts of the movie.

I saw the film at the cinema in the UK, the subtitles were the same as the quote. For some reason the American release has decided to change them.
