What's with all the hatred and bad ratings?

Saw the movie tonight and rated it 8. I feel really bad for the movie as its not getting appreciation that it deserves. 3.1? Seriously? I've seen some really horrible, terrible movies and this is not one of those. Arjun rampal was truly amazing and Ranbir did his part well. Genre is drama so you're not gonna find typical bollywood masala here. Yeah, you may find it boring or slow paced but this one shouldn't be rejected blindly. You ask bollywood to grow up and make some sensible movies but when they do you just end up either mocking or hating it. We're all just a bunch of hypocrites, if someone ask if you liked inception or interstellar or even gravity you'd probably say it was one of the best movies you've ever seen even though it bored you to death, or you didn't like the idea of the film or it just went over your head cos these movies have already been rated the best so you go with the flow and accept it even if you liked it or not. Same goes with this movie. From critics to audience everyone rejected it so everyone is now going with the flow. I personally really liked the movie, yeah it needed more explanation to the story like in a more detailed manner but it's okay. If a movie buff really decides to give it a watch they'll probably like it. Actually like or dislike is subjective but seriously the hatred and bad mouthing is what bothers me the most. Hope if you haven't seen this movie and want to watch then do give it a try. The bias is totally unnecessary.

reply

Ermm... its not being criticized because its complicated to understand rather there is nothing happening in the movie apart from random conversations.

Just because it pretends to be intellectual doesnt actually make this movie one. I've watched complicated and intelligent movies and this is movie is the complete opposite of that.

I dont know if you been paid to make this post or you have hallucinated something which wasnt there in the movie but it doesnt change the fact what an absolute piece of garbage movie this was!

reply

Well it's your opinion I guess and no I haven't been paid or anything. Like I earlier stated movies are subjective; just like you find this film total *beep* I feel just the opposite. I said what I wanted to say. I liked the dialogues too, it wasn't like they were speaking gibberish. I just wished the movie ended after "tu hai ke nahi" song. But if you've swore you'd be bashing anyone who liked this film then I don't really have a say!

reply

Its not only my opinion every critic and most sensible people who have watched this movie have came out perplexed as to how one can tolerate this absolute nothingness of a movie. You're the one who has the odd opinion.

And it wasnt even unintentionally funny to me because for that it would require some story even if silly. But this one had NO story!

reply

wasnt this movie unintentionally funny????

i never laughed like this b4 in a movie hall

reply

Well, at least for me it wasn't :)

i feeel worse for the director its his debut movie and i think this would be his last movie as well he tried to make somrthing different but ended up making nothing

reply

Naah, don't really care. Big day tomorrow, have fun :D

Bollywood has grown leaps and bounds with class movies like Udaan, Haider (some movies which you rated 6, erm..), Baby, Madras Cafe, Ugly, and many more in recent times, which really makes me feel glad. It doesn't need mindless trash like Roy, thank you.

~ Well, if this is it, old boy, I hope you don't mind if I go out speaking the King's ~

reply

LOL! Baby and Madras Cafe aren't good films. Baby is pseudo realistic and has no originality. Madras Café addresses a serious topic but the screenplay and dialogues are weak and for some strange reason Nargis acts terribly (the reviewer on Roger Ebert's site shares my opinion of the movie, just a precision).

Roy isn't trash at all and is way better than the previous 2. Thinking nothing happens in the movie doesn't make it trash, just grow up. Apart from the story, which is unusual and I understand why it displeased people, the direction is really, really good and the cinematography beautiful. Already for these reasons it's impossible to call this movie "trash". SMH.

reply

Well, the movie was actually very bad. It wanted to be Nolan but ended being a 'Shyamalan'(excluding the sixth sense) movie. Iam a big Ranbir fan but this movie hurts.

reply

"3.1? Seriously"

Exactly.. a movie which is not worth even a single star is still there.

"Roy" is insulting, "Roy" is offensive.

Director of this movie is "Sajid Khan" of serious cinema.

reply

Ok first thing. I am not here to make fun of anything.

I just saw the film and i found it quite reasonable. I mean it is not 8/10 for me but it is 7/10 because of the abstract canvas and infinite emotions. This is where this movie dwell on.

The plot had so many weak spots to which i cannot name them clever spots from directors. The questions she said were unanswered and his life was mysterious, were never asked or told. You see too much of mystery also ruins.
Then another thing, why all of sudden she left and stopped answering the phone calls. What went suddenly so wrong.

What i am guessing is, she suspected Kabir to have stolen the painting.

And one last thing, when his film got hit and he came out from part and sat on stairs. He was sitting with Roy. Was it his imagination to be talking with the character of his film or it was real. Because the very next moment Roy disappeared. If it was his imagination then it is something else but if it is really that they both were sitting then it becomes more of a crime story rather than abstract canvas.

reply

Kabir never stole the paintings, roy did! She left cos she read arjun rampal's script and realised if the girl in the movie is supposed to be her then roy is arjun rampal in real life who would eventually hurt her just like ranbir did in the movie.

Nope, it was his imagination (or his alter ego what I think). Earlier in the movie roy and ayesha aamir drove the script of the film and the moment ayesha left kabir grewal he gets devastated and ends the script where roy finds redemption by returning the paintings to Tia in the movie. Kabir did this for ayesha, cos he loved her that's why he made roy to return the paintings to tia so maybe she'd give him another chance. Arjun in real life wanted the same chance so he conveys his message through the movie. Actually some got confused that it was the same girl, like she was hooking up with both of them!

Girl with long hair - Ayesha Aamir (real life gal)
Gal with shorter har - Tia (movie character)

I know some things could have been explained. The thing i didn't get was that he wasn't done with the script but started directing the movie straight away, maybe cos he earlier wrote two films of the series but writing script simultaneously was really far fetched.

I'm not saying this's the best movie or anything. It's just people reject something and now even if anyone likes it they're all like "you must be getting paid or have lost your sanity" and just cos you didn't like the movie you can't rate it 1 or 2! And the guy who earlier said i gave movies like udaan 6 then you should also know i gave lootera an 8. The movie was pretty simple and it wasn't trying to be anything it's just the prejudice towards the movie and the hypocrisy driving the people so crazy.

reply

Really a sensible reply to post, i appreciate it.

I liked something from your post, that you gave Lootera 8/10. I also loved this film and still in love with it. The canvas was also simple but filled with emotions, simplicity and delicate relation things plus the touch of old royalty which mostly fascinates people. The story line was so powerful.

reply

Thanks man, totally appreciate it and agree what you said :)

Hello Everyone...

I think the real issue is everyone is expecting a masala movie from bollywood on Feb 14 and Roy is not a masala movie.

Roy is an interesting movie and as you said it deserves good enough rating. I will give it at least 7/10. Most of the people I talked to about this movie did not even understood the story completely. Yes it is a love triangle and as you already described this love triangle is between Ranbir Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Arjun Rampal but with a catch....

Roy and Tia (Both characters of Kabir's movie)
&
Kabir and Aisha

and Tia & Aisha both characters are played by Jacqueline.....

reply

I don't know about Roy but please don't say that movies like Inception, Interstellar of Gravity bored you to death. Those are real piece of art. Its beyond thinking of any Bollywood directors. I can watch those movies everyday.

reply

Maybe you didn't get this but what I meant to say was that sometimes people just pretend that they LOVED a certain film and advertise that it's the best movie they've ever seen or something like that but in reality they totally hated it. For instance, when 'No Country For Old Men' was nominated for the Academy awards, everyone in my class was like "this is the best movie of '07", "you should totally see this", "how can someone miss a masterpiece like this". And I'd seen Coen brothers' Fargo and I was like how come my class is suddenly into some serious drama and black comedy stuff. And when the craze was over the same bunch labeled the movie boring and had some serious questions related to the movie and the Oscars nominations. And the same thing happens when some people reject a film and later everybody join them; Even though they never watched it. It's been a week since roy's release and seems like most of the people are hating it. Who am I to argue with them? I liked the film and I believe maybe one day this movie will get the recognition it actually deserves, or have a cult following some day, who knows?

I never got a chance to watch Interstellar and personally Gravity bored me. But Inception was something that blew me away. You know why? Cos when I was a little kid I'd go to sleep thinking wish I could dream this thing today and in my dream I'd be able to differentiate that it's a dream, not reality but it never happened. Before I realise I'm dreaming I'd lose sleep. So no, such thing is not beyond thinking. People like Nolan have the guts to make a movie out of something they really believe in. And yes such people are missing from the Indian cinema for a very long time.

reply

Yes, I'm agee with you many peoples are like that only. They don't know how to criticize movie and goes up with what others say.

reply

Totally agree with that. But in my case I still not watch the Roy movie so i came here for reference. "No country for Old Men" is the simply the iconic movie. But in the case of Bollywood there are basic formulae like songs and styles but i love the movie Swadesh cause it is so natural and the song of it is like just a music no masala in there. There is no much twisted and illusion but movie has a heart. But there are so many Bollywood movie which are called subjective but too much boring. I think making a subjective movie is so challenging. Gravity oh really that movie really boring. They aren't caring much about story. It was so boring but there was something in that. They are succeed to show us what they want to show. Cause our expectation in sci-fi movie is technology. And there are so many time we also think we are also alone in space. That's the touch of movie so I satisfied. Inception and the prestige is not only movie they are challenging to you get them right way. Nolan always try to make tricky illusion in movie like his first short movie Dogtooth.

So all i can say is subjective movie is really bored if they haven't heart or they can't shocked you by twist and mystery then they destroy the whole package of drama. Nolan is going perfect in mind bending twist in movie in perfect way. Shutter Island was so boring movie for me but when i finished that..Oh my god! i didn't believe really shocking twist ending. Then i watched twice. Cause the leading character of movie make us fool and the character is not so smart.

Seeing so many bad comment means Roy isn't a normal beautiful movie but like you guys say it is subjective but for me Sujbective movie can only impress with their mind bending and shocking climax. Does Roy really have?

reply

High five bro. Your post is one of the most accurate posts in a long time. At least coherent to what I felt about the movie. not denying the fact that Roy is indeed one of the BEST SHOT movies of Bollywood, I did not find any flaw with the acting. Most people are watching the movie thinking of it as a thriller with a 'big reveal'. I say, try watching it as a normal movie and you might get the hang of it. To me, this is one of the most beautiful movies ever made in Bollywood also, the single most misunderstood movie ever made. Just sad on the levels of hypocrisy. There are people who watched Enemy and The Double and didn't understand anything(IMO one is at fault if one attempts to understand anything from Enemy). Roy was about TWO SIMPLE STORIES, running parallely. No big surprise thrill. Just a simple fact that how a story can possess the writer and *beep* up his mind.

Cheers for good taste.

reply

Haha finally someone who agrees! Glad you liked it, it's one of the movies that you could actually suggest someone to give it a try.

I dont write on IMDB often, but after being told by almost everyone to avoid ROY, i still watched it just to get over with a new release, and found a pretty decent bollywood film. Yes it was slow, a little boring, but the genre is drama, and thats how that genre is. Nice acting, nice screenplay, a nice and simple story (which i am amazed that people couldnt get. It really was NOT complicated at all).

So I thought to check its rating on IMDB, hoping to get a 6 or 5 atleast. I found ROY at 2.8. And there i see why bollywood will find it very hard to get to hollywood level. No action, no thrill, no masala, no humour and your movie is a flop. Sad to see a decent film being mocked at. Its not a masterpiece, even in drama genre, but it certainly sits in the 5 - 7 rating category, IMO.

P.S. Your mention of gravity was spot on. Rated at 7.9, winner of 7 academy awards, is a slow, boring, yet a fabulous movie. Gravity was a masterpiece. Though roy is not a masterpiece, it still is a decent watch.

reply

I don't think it's the best movie ever or anything. It just annoyed me to the core that everyone was making fun of roy and anybody who liked the film. Maybe that's why I gave it an 8. But then again we can't tell anyone what to like and what not to :)

About gravity, I think I'm more of a social sci-fi guy, I like movies like safety not guaranteed, about time to name a couple in that genre. Sounds funny but I saw that movie (Gravity) for George Clooney alone. I've been a huge Clooney fan ever since I saw up in the air and the decendents. I've got nothing against gravity, I did like it and remember rating it good. The reference was just for the people who blindly go for any film which has won oscars or got a reputation but personally don't even enjoy watching the film and praise it because going against the flow would make them look like a stupid or something.

I completely agree with you. I loved this movie and was glad to see someone making an attempt to do something different than the usual masala movie bandwagaon. The movie although not perfect keeps us engaged till the end if one has patience and tries to understand the subtle hints. This is not a movie for everyone. Most of the folks who went to watch the movie were expecting the usual masala thriller. The marketing team did a terrible job by adding the two peppy songs which are completely out of place for this kinda movie. I would still give it a 10 just for attempting to make a different movie to compensate the mindless negative reviews given here. However, I think this is more of a 8/10 movie. But good to see atleast we have some folks who liked it for the content.
