Probably to show he's a good guy. But I think it might have benefit if he were to leave one alive because then her and hubby felt that fear as he shouted 'run'. Maybe they can help change the mind of their peers that the purge is a good thing (either because they're afraid of retribution or because they feel empathy for their victims (less likely))
