The Chimpunks getting grounded

What did Dave mean when he told the Chipmunks not to smile when they were grounded?

I can't remember what the context is but I would have said the same thing if I grounded some kids and they were goofing off. I would have been pissed if I left my house and it was trashed when I came back to it.

wilsonandrewc: I notice that the title of your original post reads "The Chimpunks getting grounded" (my italics). I think you may have inadvertently created a great idea for these movies' future! Instead of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore always staying the same age, they could for the first time grow into adolescence, at which point they'd become caught up in a musical rivalry with The Chimpunks, a trio of chimpanzees who are punk rockers (with spiked hair, safety-pin piercings, and so on). This'd be a good way to keep the loyalty of the current Chipmunks fans as they become teenagers--an alternative to the more obvious strategy of repeatedly having to convert the latest crop of young children into fans.

Because they wanted to go to Florida. They got grounded first, and Dave had to take them to Florida, so they were happy.

I never dared smile when I got grounded either.
