Towards the end question. SPOILERS

So when the worst/last of the 'fathers' is at the hospital with his biological mom, we get to see the flash back and it shows that the bad father raped a girl that the kids biological father liked back in school? The girl wasnt the kids bio mother was it? I mean wouldnt she recognize him?

Were they implying that his 'bad' father was actually his bio father? Thats why they saw the same monster? And thats why he stopped the gang from killing him after the kidnapping went bad? Im very confused about that part. But over all a fantastic film and I really liked the end, karma coming back for that wealthy guy.

I think
bio father and mother are 'bad' father and woman he lives with
father and mother who raised him adopted him after rape

Later in the film it said his mother was 55 years old, which would have made her too old and as you said she would have recognized him. In the flashback she appeared much younger than his father. His father was a helper at the orphanage so would have been older than the students.

I think that bad father was his bio father, which is why they both saw monsters and his bio mother is the woman that was raped and ended up living with him. After the rape they ended up adopting him. The only thing against this is that it said that his father liked the woman, which is why bad father raped her. He must have already been married at this point, so maybe when it said liked, it meant on a platonic level.

I agree that the Biological Father is the "Bad Father" but I'm struggling to see how his Biological Mother would be the chained up women who is living with the "Bad Father"? I mean he raped the young girl and the orphanage guy adopted the kid and took care of him with his wife .. so what exactly happens to the young girl at this point? after 9 months she pops out the baby and then what? Are we assuming the "bad Father" got arrested and was in jail during this time & longer and then when he finally gets out - he kidnaps the girl he had raped earlier??? Then he decides to kidnap back their son??? Or was that completely coincidence that the kid he kidnapped was his son? Idk just some thoughts. So to sum up my thoughts on what I think happened - the orphanage guy and his wife raised the kid until he was kidnapped - neither are the biological parents. The "Bad Dad" is the biological father. I think the chained up women is NOT his bio mother - the bio mother is never seen in this film except in the flashback where she is raped. Anyways would be interested to discuss it more and hear more thoughts / explanations :)

My reading was that the raped girl was his bio mom. The raped girl married the guy without a leg. They raised a kid until he was kidnapped. The kid was the product of the rape.

The "bad" dad and his group kidnapped the kid. He probably didn't know for sure if it was his kid or not but he was further punishing the guy without a leg and the guy without a leg was rich so they were seeking a ransom. More on that below.

The kid is the "bad" dad's kid though.

The chained woman was a family friend or nanny that was raised in the orphanage originally. She came along with the package when "bad" dad kidnapped the kid.

If bio mom was the chained woman, the dead mom would not have cared so much to hear about Hwayi from "bad" dad before he killed her. They wouldn't have kept his room a shrine to Hwayi. And they wouldn't feel compelled to stay in the apartment awaiting Hwayi's return in the face of such adversity since, if the chained woman was the bio mom and the man without a leg was not the bio dad, they would have only been missing a kid they adopted, raised for a couple years then lost. Not that that wouldn't leave someone with feelings but that probably wouldn't have been illustrated that way in the movie.

Also, I gathered that the man without a leg was sexually abusing the "bad" dad in the orphanage which is why we see him with a knife in bed when he's seeing the monster. He is being sarcastic when "bad" dad says that the man without a leg must have been a saint. The man without a leg told "bad" dad to pray in order to place guilt back onto "bad" dad when he was victimizing him - a common practice of abusers.

"Bad" dad figured out that praying was not going to help him and that it was a tactic being used against him so "Bad" dad eventually stared the monster in the face and took revenge at the man without a leg by raping his girlfriend and pitchforking his now missing leg.

"Bad" dad may have kidnapped Hwayi to prevent him from being victimized by the man without a leg too.

Because "bad" dad was pretty psychologically screwed up, he raised Hwayi in such a manner as to traumatize Hwayi which gave Hwayi a monster too. Essentially, "bad" dad had passed his monster onto Hwayi. Not by sexually abusing him but by mentally and physically abusing him.

"Bad" dad correlated his own "getting dirty" with his escape from the monster which is why he was self-reinforced in his desire to have Hwayi "get dirty". "Bad" dad's actual salvation from the monster came because he had confronted his abuser not because he "got dirty".

Hwayi's escape from the monster comes to him the same way after confronting "bad" dad.

I could have some of this or all of this wrong but that was my take on it. They certainly left a lot of it to our imagination because of the lack of clarity.

Tell me what you think.

The kid who prayed was a kid who was physically weaker than the young bad dad. So how exactly is he preying on him? And why would he marry a girl that was raped by the guy who cut off his leg and later forgave regardless.

I agree that all 3 are too old to be in their 30s but I figured they just made them all look older as characters given the difficult life they had. Ie, they chose older actors for younger roles. I watched another film of a guy who died at 26 yet was played by a 56yr old.

OK, so maybe I'm the one who's confused? My take was that the chained woman was the girl "bad" dad raped in school. I guess I assumed this b/c of the prominent cross she wore, and by the fact that (early on) she was chained to keep her there. I actually thought the bio-parents were the ones who had Hwayi before the kidnapping, and that the "bad" dad had taken Hwayi to punish bio-dad b/c the prayers hadn't cleansed him, and that he made Hwayi kill his own bio-dad. I didn't get that the "bad" dad was his biological one, though I found it interesting that they both saw monsters. I figured that Hwayi's monster came from being in that chest, and "bad" dad was aware of Hwayi's monster b/c Hwayi told him so himself. The other posts have certainly given me more to chew on...

Interesting. I suspected what other posters have outlined but your post is the only one that makes chronological sense.

I don't think the 'bad' dad could have actually been his biological father due to the amount of time that mustve elapsed between the rape and his age in the present. (He can't have been 21+ at the orphanage, + 9 months, + 14 (7 when kidnapped in 1998 and present is 2005?) which puts him at 35 yrs old max and he looks far older (the actor is 47). Also he seems to be a similar age to the purported biological father (the one gets shots multiple times at the start of the film) who also looks far older in the present.

That said the post credits scene implies the chained woman is his biological mother so I'm stumped.

Good film regardless.

The two of you killed everything I ever loved. **** you both.

I wouldn't chew on that stuff as you are correct.

the Bio parents are his real parents, the chained girl was the one who was raped by bad-dad.

It's all pretty clear. Maybe using the character names might help people though.

The "chained" woman is named Young-joo - they call her that 5 minutes into the movie when they are taking the kid out of the planter. And in the flashback rape scene the girl is also referred to as Young-joo.

Makes sense that the bad father (Suk-Tae) was the bio father since, right before he murders the mother in the hospital he says Hwayi got the monster from him.
