... I think I fig'erd it out . ...

... I guess this movie is the true story of the director ... how screwed up, misguided, and in crisis he was as he tried to do 'reasearch' for the film - all while projecting himself onto the film idea thru Dante ... seems like he just totally got lost in rebound one-niters, along with all the muddled facts & theories surrounding the actual story of the murder ...

... so ... finally, after all the dust settles ... the film maker created a film about himself ... apparently, the 'true story' part is his chemical depedency, bitter divorce, which contributed to his depressive persnality, and all  the movie industry people with their creative input, also noted was the writer, Simone saying right away how much 'truth' was not allowed/had to be changed in the book, and he would have to do the same for the movie ...

Considering the guenuine evidence of the murder was completely muddled bu the investigation ... further muddled by changes in the book - whatever film he produced would also be a mess ...
and ´viola ... what a mess ...
apparently, he realized the best possibility was his own journey thru the external & his internal mazes ...

. . . ?

. . . or was it just a crap movie ...?

You're right on all counts as far as I'm concerned, except that he was a screen writer with writers' block (LOL!), not a director, and his story wasn't true, though it was set against the background of the true criminal case.

. . . or was it just a crap movie ...?
Yep, that too!🐭
