Overrated

The whole premise was illogical. There was no reason for her to be both the victim and the villain.

Overrated? If anything it's underrated. Clever story, effectively scary and there was a twist. For a low budget film, I'd say that's not bad.

I do not agree at all. Given how everyone seems to be unanimous in their praise of this movie, it's overrated.

The movie isn't scary because the ghosts never pose a direct threat to the protagonist. It manages to develop an effective atmosphere, but the atmosphere loses its impact once it becomes clear the ghosts are only trying to scare her. In order for the scares to be effective, the protagonist's life needs to be danger, and throughout the vast majority of the movie, she's not in danger of being killed.

The movie doesn't work from a psychological angle either because it's revealed too early on that there are ghosts messing with her. Seeing the ghosts and then learning who they are and what's motivating them before the halfway mark removes much of mystery from the movie, and when an officer confirms that strange occurrences have been taking place at the old station, it can't be reasonably argued that the events are taking place inside the protagonist's head.

The story is nothing new, but that's not a deal breaker because how the story is told is more important. The story is falls apart because Last Shift can't decide whether it wants to be a psychological thriller or a straight-up horror film, so it becomes unsatisfying mixture of both. It doesn't work as a thriller because it reveals too much information too early on. It doesn't work as a horror movie because it doesn't do enough with the actual menace of the ghosts. And it all builds up to an unsatisfying and frustrating ending, where any cleverness is undone by plot holes and absurdity.

In the end, this seems like one of those movies that gets praised because it's outside of the cinematic mainstream and it has a few elements that work, when as a whole, it's severely lacking in key areas.

Not true. The entire point to them terrorizing her was to break her psychologically so someone else could kill her and they could recruit her into their cult. The cult members couldn't harm her physically, hence them being ghosts. That's why they relied on her being killed by being under the impression someone actually WAS trying to harm her. It's a very clever premise.

Although I don't agree with that, I also feel it is not over rated because this movie isn't highly rated.

Totally agree with you. It wasn't even close to decent as it left too many questions

It had merit, but I spent more time looking at the clock than the screen.
