What a Terrible Male Lead Character

It's not a bad movie, but having such a whiny, childish, insecure and neurotic character who is overly pretentious, judgmental and just generally unlikable really detracts from the story in general.

Am I supposed to feel sorry for him? Because I sure as hell can't identify with him.

Hell - the character even says he doesn't even identify as "people", he talks about how he can't grasp emotions such as love -- he says emotions don't seem real to him. That's just how much of a sociopath he is. Yes, his character is a total sociopath. He's completely cerebral and shows no actual emotions, his sole expression of his love is a physical object (the ring which he is too much of a coward to give), he is completely clueless about other people and their feelings, and to him, he is the center of the world.

The only way they could make this freak any more of a sociopath would be to have him torture small animals.
Honestly, I constantly found myself thinking "how the hell can she tolerate this creep?" over and over and over.
I felt sorry that she was in such a lousy relationship with a neurotic coward and was happy and relieved when she finally left him and got knocked up by someone else.

Good thing they cut away at the end and didn't show him choking her to death "because he can't let her live in this world without him" after she pushed him and his unwanted advances away.

I'd have to say that it was part of the story in general.

Guess they just wanted to assault the audience with an hour and a half of pointless self-centered whining.
Maybe some people get off on that -- I felt like my time had been wasted.

I said "part", not "all". :P
