What is the attraction to living this way?

I can easily understand someone wanting to live in the country with a lot of property around them for the quiet and enjoy farming. But I don't see the attraction of wanting to live where each daily event is a struggle just to survive. I know people mention that our ancestors lived this way, but you have to wonder if the ancestors had the choice would they still do this. I tend to think they wouldn't by the fact that the majority of the population doesn't live in these extreme conditions just to survive. Or is this really a life-style choice for people who are isolationists but don't want to admit that?

The more challenge a person goes through, the stronger they become. Adversity makes great people, so long as it doesn't destroy/break them.

It's far more satisfying to struggle for food and shelter directly, than to struggle with money and debt for the same goals. You have to seriously try both to really get it.

Why do some people like living in big cities like New York or Chicago? Why do some people enjoy running? Why do some people enjoy watching golf on TV? Why do some people like to collect stamps? Why do some people find Miley Cyrus attractive? My point is that not everyone likes or dislikes the same thing. Something that is your favorite activity may be considered useless to someone else. For what ever reason, living a simple life appeals to some.

After all of the recent news of complete insanity in some of our major cities (rioting, looting, shootings, etc.), Life Below Zero looks quite appealing to me. If I were younger I could see myself escaping the madness and seeking refuge like the folks on LBZ. And, in my opinion, it's only going to get worse in the lower 48 in the coming years. Consider sitting comfortably by a pot belly stove sipping a hot toddy in the serenity of your cabin in the woods. No brainer.

Different strokes for different folks. Some people prefer the big city of NYC and some people like the wide open spaces of Alaska.

Maybe it's because people suck???

Very few people choose to live this far off the grid. It is a constant struggle.
I believe it is in their DNA.
They are not misanthropes, but some are.
They don't hate people, but some do.

Although I would never choose to do it, I can understand the desire to live outside of the rat race.

To each his own. I wouldn't last five minutes there but i understand the attraction. That pioneer spirit and bravery is admirable.

I've only watched one season, but I heard the Salatins and Hailstones say it repeatedly. They enjoy doing for themselves. They enjoy being their own bosses. It's perfectly natural for people that were raised in this manner to prefer it. It's not a character flaw.
