The Doggies

does anyone feel sorry for the way the dogs are treated by that Jessie Holmes guy. I mean who the hell wants to be chained up 24/7 freezing outside.

reply

NO- they are a breed of dog that is made for this situation, would you feel bad for a German shepherd that herds all day ?

reply

Jesse treats his dogs very well. They come first with him, before anything. The dogs have to be chained so they won't wander away and get eaten by a bear. All the Alaskan sled dog breeds have heavy coats for winter.

Andy treats his dogs a whole lot better than he treated his woman.

That's a stupid comparison, one is chained up all day, the other is running around

reply

both serve their purpose, the reason they are chained up well lets see BEARS! IMAGINE the dog running off into that wilderness..

They eat well, get exercise, and have booties to protect their paws. I'd say they get treated well. This coming from a dog lover who does spoils her dogs rotten.

reply

No. The dogs are not pets. They are work dogs, all of their needs are met and Jesse needs them to survive. He can't afford to lose his dogs. He takes care of them.

That's the setup all of them are from what Ive seen in several different shows & also a documentary on (??? Can't think of his name) but he's won the huge long sled race many times & finished towards top numerous, one of top men in it in history. They have a large amount of dogs with sand set-up as well and also build log cabins as a business too. It's been awhile since I've seen it so sorry can't remember.

Also I saw someone comment somewhere about the type of dogs Jessie has aren't even Huskies. People naturally expect that from Akaska as what we've been shown from movies & stuff & from my understanding they are very expensive. Also on the multiple shows I've seen the dogs aren't Huskies & are like Jessie's. You can see their ribs & all but they are healthy unless having issues, on all the shows & that's how they are for what they do.

I met a lady at my Vet whose been to AK many times & she said she was surprised at the different races they went to that they weren't Huskies & I mentioned these shows & she said that's exactly what they are. My VET said my large lab should live in AK with his heavy double fur coat & I said it's funny you said that as we watch these shows & I wish we could of been in AK as well.

Also this season Jessie was able to renovate the dog yard, put in posts that allows the chain to go full circle & not twist up which is a huge improvement & built all new houses which were exactly the same as ones I've seen in other dog camps. He was very careful about using the paw booties when needed to protect their paws as I've seen some do & others not bother. He seems to be improving & maybe this is what he's been working towards and had been starting out doing his best.

I like that the shows many different types of people and how they live and make it in AK, if they were all the same would get boring real fast. I didn't like Jessie so much when he first came on but it seems like lately hes made strives to improve all for the dogs and maybe he is just now able to do that. He certainly seems to care about them. peope like Andy were older and more established.

On Yukon Men the multiple dog owners were at different levels of establishment. They had new and mid-level and older. But all their dogs looked just like Jessie's as well.

Anyone who keeps an animal chained shouldn't be allowed to own one. I don't care what kind of BS you come up with, animals don't like being chained. If these people love their dogs so much why don't they build a proper kennel for them?

First of all, a working dog isn't left alone all the time like it was someone's backyard mutt who never gets any attention at all. The dogs in that show have eachother and their people to interact with; they're not left alone and they're only tethered when they're not doing something else (such as training for races, moving wood, backpacking like Andy's dogs did in a recent epi, etc).

Second, in the north country it snows MUCH too much to make fences practical--and it's not like either Andy or Jesse have enough room in their houses to let all their dogs inside.

Dogs don't think the same way people do. People have an emotional hangup about chains b/c of the old stigma of human slavery. Let it go.
