Fake Yosemite landscape background?

When they end up on a mountain after a hike in the Yosemite National Park, it looks to me like the scene was shot with an old fashioned post card as a still background, instead of actual video footage of that location.

I was wondering the same thing. There was no natural or realistic movement going on in the background.

It was real! It's just that it even looks fake when you're there in person. But we were really there!

Yeah, my wife and I have been to that very spot where they are portrayed having climbed to, with the view of Half Dome several miles away. But there was a large log to the left and it appears to be gone now. I have a photo of me sitting on that log!

And if I understand correctly this was your directorial debut and it is a good one. Nice job!

Thank you! And there were some logs a few hundred feet away so maybe they moved them.

Thanks for watching!

it did look a little off. The foreground was so clear and bright but the background was grey and flat and still. That's what make photography fun.

The reason it looks that way is because there is about 3 miles of air between the foreground and the background, which is a feature called Half Dome. The mountains farther away are maybe 10 to 15 miles away. Half Dome is very large, in fact at any given time on a clear day hikers are on the top of Half Dome but you can't see them without binoculars because they are so small in comparison.

I have a 16X20 enlargement of a photo my wife took of me on a log in the foreground and the background looks pretty close (sort of grey and flat, as you put it) to what we see in the movie.

For those who have never been to Yosemite to see El Capitan and Half Dome in their natural setting have no idea how massive they are.
