Adeline
Given that the real Adeline died in the fire that she started, why didn't the police/fire brigade investigate to ascertain whose dead body it was when Vanessa Redgaves's character turned up on the scene assuming Adeline's role?

Remember there were three girls but everyone thought there were only two. In the fire, one of the twins dies (not necessarily Adeline; in the book it's even implied the one who died was Emmeline), but then when young Vida Winter shows up people assume she's Adeline and that the other one who was in the fire but survived was Emmeline. They didn't search for a body because they didn't thought there would be one.
