I don't think that's the case. This is not a story about a husband who batters her wife on a regular basis. In fact, the fact that it's the first time, that he does not even remember it, that he works so hard for her forgiveness, make more credible their reconciliation. And then of course he cracks open that one beer, and you wonder if the whole thing is going to start all over again. Until the hitman puts an end to the whole thing, hopes, fears and all.

She actually seemed like an annoying schoolgirl...not a woman.

I think Salumbre's answer is spot-on, but I also want to add that the woman's actions in no way show her "growing a pair." She ran to her mother after being beaten, then left with her husband the next morning and quickly let him back into her life. She didn't stand up to the guy.
