Some things never change...

I was thinking about this movie (thus SPOILERS AHEAD (sort of), be forewarned).

I was thinking that maybe one of the central themes was "Some things never change." I mean, it's obvious with Teddy's character (the extremely loveable Fran Kranz). There's that part where, at the failed dinner table, the mother says to her daughter, (and I'm paraphrasing here), "He just can't wait to wriggle off that hook." And he can't, can he? He jumps through what we perceive as days worth of retribution. It's clear that he loves his wife, but the second after they've coupled (double entendre intended ;D) he's back at it. We all know that it starts with just one, but it doesn't take but a single push to be back to black-out drunk.

Some things never change.

Like with Molly, who loves her husband from the moon to back! And yet, did you see her? Two black eyes, numerous cuts, and her mid-section looks like he used her like a punching bag. What kind of night was this that we missed, cuz... it's hard to get that drunk. So drunk you don't remember leaving your wife like a sack of dead meat. But does that mean she's gone forever, like she probably should be? No.

Some things never change.

Like the friend who comes over to help (drive him to the motel, do chores around the house). His buddy has done something so bad, it's just STARING him in the face, but does that mean he's going to help his friend get clean? Not at the expense of his own "fun". Having a lemonade at 3, working in the hot days' sun, is an impossibility. It's just gotta be a beer, and his friend just has to get it for him.

Some things never change.

Gordon, Angela... even Howard, at the end. All the same.

I thought it was an interesting message. Real in its simplicity. A huge problem is that we're a slave to the routine of what we perceive as our lives. A slave to the need of our wants, too (Angela mentions something along this line at dinner).

What do you think? Validity in my theory that this was a central theme?

Agree with you in most points. The majority of people I know are most comfortable in the situation they are and are skeptical to changes (me too, but sometimes changes (in review) turn out to enrich one's life.

So my point is: some things never change as long as you don't give them a chance to, if not you'll never know.

I like to drink a lot but I get peaceful. If I knew I'd get agressive and loose control I wouldn't do it.

That's what I took from this movie.

It was a bit of lazy writing and effort, but it didn't make it a bad movie. Playing to the simple and expected by most makes it a good movie of the week.

Somethings never change worked, but it could have been a better movie had the writers chosen to be creative.

I find it ironic that your tag line is all about fact v opinion (and... it's perfectly proven that fact exists =D), and yet you seem so convinced that it was "lazy" writing (opinion), that it didn't make a bad movie (also opinion), that "to most" it makes it a "good movie" (opinion, once again!), and that it could have been "better" had it been more "creative". Wait for it... =DDD

I don't mind your opinion(s), some of them I share, it's just an interesting irony to me.

I don't understand your comparison. For me, my tag line is all about all anyone knows is the accumulation of their knowledge. Even if you have the best information available, that 'fact' can change when/if more knowledge is added down the road. A simple example is we used to 'know' the world was flat. That information became old news when more knowledge was added down the road. So, in short, don't get too attached to your idea of what correct is that you stop listening to the other person. They might be adding something helpful.

Compare the above 'everyone can possibly add something useful to the conversation' with my opinions of this movie and I think they fit together well enough. I don't understand stand the ironic outcome of the two.

Maybe you can help me understand what you are saying in your post? Thanks!

Oooooooh! That I like! I like that very much! =D

But that's not what I got from your tagline. Sorry, I think it's just a case of it having personal meaning for you, but the way I translated it was like this (my thoughts are in italics)--

Life is like Wikipedia

Sometimes wrong, and not always representing every side of the coin... (Don't get me wrong, I _love_ Wikipedia, but there's plenty of negative criticism for it. Some earned, but in my experience, most not)

There are not facts...

But! But! Of course there are! The sun is a star. Fact! Onions are disgusting... er, okay, no (but still true!), um, cats can, apparently, haz cheezburgr. Reality television generally scores higher and is much less expensive to produce, thus its rabid popularity! Banging your head against the wall for an hour burns 150 calories! ETCETERA!

Just popular opinion.

Eep! One of those people who'll argue the world is only 6000 years old?

And that's the way my brain interpreted that! As I said, complete failure. =)) Everyone can possibly add something useful to the conversation is an equally beautiful sentiment. I don't know... if this is the person you are (and you know you better than me!), I'd say those are far better taglines, then! But only because I really applaud and enjoy those values! =DD

Per paragraph:
1- She also loves him. The second after they've coupled he's back in her life regardless. In the eyes of the law if this happens everything done beforehand whether it was a beating, or the husband cheating.

2- I know a man who cannot take a single drink because he won't stop until he blacks out, does things which could get him sent to prison, and were it not for his wife 'fixing' the mess he would be. This particular wife has not left him either.

3- Agreed. The friend's is NO friend. The above man doesn't allow this type of friend (& he had many) to be in his life any longer. He finally realized after the last 'episode', as we call them, he didn't need friends such as.

4- Agreed, yet, one can change. It takes enormous willpower to do so. People can change.

More, or less, concur. Some things and some people never change.
