Some things never change...
I was thinking about this movie (thus SPOILERS AHEAD (sort of), be forewarned).
I was thinking that maybe one of the central themes was "Some things never change." I mean, it's obvious with Teddy's character (the extremely loveable Fran Kranz). There's that part where, at the failed dinner table, the mother says to her daughter, (and I'm paraphrasing here), "He just can't wait to wriggle off that hook." And he can't, can he? He jumps through what we perceive as days worth of retribution. It's clear that he loves his wife, but the second after they've coupled (double entendre intended ;D) he's back at it. We all know that it starts with just one, but it doesn't take but a single push to be back to black-out drunk.
Some things never change.
Like with Molly, who loves her husband from the moon to back! And yet, did you see her? Two black eyes, numerous cuts, and her mid-section looks like he used her like a punching bag. What kind of night was this that we missed, cuz... it's hard to get that drunk. So drunk you don't remember leaving your wife like a sack of dead meat. But does that mean she's gone forever, like she probably should be? No.
Some things never change.
Like the friend who comes over to help (drive him to the motel, do chores around the house). His buddy has done something so bad, it's just STARING him in the face, but does that mean he's going to help his friend get clean? Not at the expense of his own "fun". Having a lemonade at 3, working in the hot days' sun, is an impossibility. It's just gotta be a beer, and his friend just has to get it for him.
Some things never change.
Gordon, Angela... even Howard, at the end. All the same.
I thought it was an interesting message. Real in its simplicity. A huge problem is that we're a slave to the routine of what we perceive as our lives. A slave to the need of our wants, too (Angela mentions something along this line at dinner).
What do you think? Validity in my theory that this was a central theme?
