James Dean's talk at Warner Brothers

When Jimmy is at WB and his career building strategy is prepared, the following dialogue takes place,

How would you like to be a judge
at a bikini contest at Santa Monica?
Picks are gonna cover it,
six-page spread, lots of flesh.

What are Picks?
I'm doing a translation to another language and don't quite get it.
Thanks.

Professional Photographers perhaps. The reference to the six page spread=six pages of photos in a major magazine.

Pics = 'Picture Papers' like "Photoplay", I would think - the glossy film star magazines popular during the 1950s.

'What does it matter what you say about people?'
Touch of Evil (Orson Welles, 1958).

Today they say pics for pictures.

Back in this time the studios made you or broke you. If you did well for them you could, like he said, live your life after you do for them however you wanted, and many did. They covered-up indiscretions, provided drugs if you had weight issues, and even plastic surgery to correct obvious flaws, they had lawyers at the ready for mistakes, but you had to do as they said nearly like a puppet. And many did and still do. Only the business isn't the same anymore. Beyond ruthless. And the star-maker machinery who churned you out can shred you just as easily. And the slower they do it the harder it is on the actor.
