sharePics = 'Picture Papers' like "Photoplay", I would think - the glossy film star magazines popular during the 1950s.

Back in this time the studios made you or broke you. If you did well for them you could, like he said, live your life after you do for them however you wanted, and many did. They covered-up indiscretions, provided drugs if you had weight issues, and even plastic surgery to correct obvious flaws, they had lawyers at the ready for mistakes, but you had to do as they said nearly like a puppet. And the slower they do it the harder it is on the actor.
