Was the British woman supposed to be college aged?

It never specified how they were friends. But colleges have all different ages anyway.

In the UK, college attendance isn't really the same as in the US. US students tend to go to college immediately after graduating high school. That does happen in the UK too, but you'll see people of all ages in classes, from teenagers through to middle-agers, all the way up to senior citizens.
